Glamour, pride, and a little friendly
competition took over D.C. tonight.
It was the annual 17th Street High Heel Race.
Let's bring in Fox 5's Regina Ureta.
She's live on 17th Street in Northwest D.C. with more
on the winner and the party.
And it looks like behind you, the cleanup.
Hey, Regina.
Yeah, Jim and Angie, you're looking at the aftermath here,
but it was all glitter, glam, and high heels here on 17th Street.
You can't really see the finish line here.
We got that truck blocking it right now,
but you're seeing the cleanup process.
MPD still here closing some of the streets
and then of course tearing down the gates there in
that section but I want to show you the moments
of that race tonight and there's one of tonight's
winners Kenny Monroe taking home the win
for the second time his first victory was back in 2024
we caught up with Kenny after the race to hear what
the win means to him and the inspiration
behind tonight's look this is my lazy last minute
Halloween outfit I looked at my closet I was like
okay race car jacket i have a toy
car that's the fit i would say yes i'm always up for a challenge
now the race is more than a competition it's
a celebration of the LGBTQ plus community and the
diversity that makes this neighborhood unique
organizers say thousands of spectators pack
Dupont Circle each year to watch participants race
in their high heels and this event has
become a DC tradition in 2018 mayor Muriel Bowser officially proclaimed
the 17th Street High Heel
race a mayoral event now 39 years after it began
the race is still going strong we also spoke with
DC mayoral candidate Janice Lewis George about
tonight's event here's what she had to say has
been proud to be one of the gayest cities in the world we
are so proud of our LGBTQIA community here
in DC and so i'd love any opportunity to celebrate
that and the countdown is already on for next
year's 40th anniversary as far as tonight it seems like people
are still out and about it's a little
over 10 15 p.m and the streets are uh well pretty active here
as they're tearing down tonight's
event but still an exciting time
and of course an exciting time for the winners and all the
participants angie and jim
