Texas is at the centre of the 2026 US midterm battle, but a major redrawing of congressional districts has left some Latino voters unsure about who represents them and which candidates will appear on their ballots.

In 2025, Texas Republicans redrew the state's congressional map at President Donald Trump's urging, aiming to improve Republican prospects in five additional House seats. The changes have reshaped districts in Houston and South Texas, moving voters into unfamiliar constituencies and changing the political calculations for both parties.

In Houston's new 9th Congressional District, reporting found that 97 out of every 100 residents had been in a different district during the 2024 election. Some voters say they only recently discovered the change and do not recognise the candidates now competing for their votes.

The bigger question is whether redistricting will translate into Republican gains—or whether changing voter sentiment, economic concerns and candidate appeal will reshape the contest. Analysts differ on how much the new boundaries will affect the final outcome.

With the November 3 midterms approaching and control of the US House at stake, Texas has become a key test of how electoral maps, Latino voters and local concerns could influence national politics.
