Brazil's Lula wins re-election as Bolsonaro calls for vote to be annulled

Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, pulled off a dramatic comeback on Sunday to clinch re-election to a fourth non-consecutive term. The leftist icon won just under 52% of the vote, according to official results. His rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, son of the former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, got 48.2%. The run-off victory marks a turnaround for Lula, who trailed Bolsonaro in the first round of the presidential election. Sunday's voting was extended by two hours over concerns that rains and public transport outages had prevented citizens from voting. Now Bolsonaro is calling the move unacceptable and a dirty trick. He's refusing to accept the loss, instead calling for the vote to be annulled. Lula's victory bucks a recent trend that's seen numerous South American nations shift right, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
