Our 19-Month-Old vs. a Thousand Fish (Our Last Morning Before Tetiaroa)

Oct 27, 2026

Our 19-month-old went into the water and came up in the middle of a school of fish.

We're a family of four - Dad (James), Mum, Chelsea (4) and Maverick (19 months) - living aboard Leo Nui, our Leopard 48 catamaran, in French Polynesia. This was our last morning at Hana Iti, on Huahine, before an eighteen-hour passage to Tetiaroa, and Mum finally got us to the coral garden she had been trying to get us to for weeks: "I've been trying to get us here for weeks, but we're here now."

What's in it:
The dinghy ride out over water so flat and clear you can see every coral head from the bow
Chelsea sliding off the dinghy tube into the lagoon, and Maverick going in after her
The fish arrive: a huge school of butterflyfish all around Dad and Maverick - "Whoa, so many fish"
An underwater stretch with Chelsea diving down to the coral, swimming with Mum in a school of sergeant majors, and finning along the reef with Dad
Back on the tube with a fish ID card, feet in the water, while the fish come right up to the kids' toes
Chelsea popping up to tell Mum she has found what she calls the coral path
One last go on the rope swing with Dad, then back to the boat to get ready for the overnight passage
