She entered the palace at 14, gave birth to the future emperor at 15, and passed away at 24.

She was Empress Xiaokangzhang, of the Tongjia clan, the birth mother of the Kangxi Emperor. Later generations often embellish her story with poignant love tales, describing her deep affection for the Shunzhi Emperor. But the truth of history is—she received no favor or love during her lifetime, yet received continuous posthumous honors.

She came from a Han Chinese banner family; her grandfather, Tong Yangzheng, led his entire clan to surrender to the Later Jin dynasty, making the Tong family founding heroes of the Qing dynasty. At 14, she was selected to enter the palace, becoming a concubine of the Shunzhi Emperor. Without favor or attention, only the daily loneliness of Jingren Palace. She was like a forgotten shadow in the Forbidden City, guarding the empty palace, living a life ignored by all.

A year after entering the palace, she became pregnant. On March 18th of the eleventh year of the Shunzhi Emperor's reign, she gave birth to a boy in Jingren Palace—Xuan Ye, who later became the Kangxi Emperor. However, according to Qing Dynasty palace rules, concubines could not personally raise princes. She could only catch a glimpse of him from afar during designated times. She couldn't hold him, breastfeed him, or even speak a few words to him. The pain of separation from one's own flesh and blood is unimaginable to those who haven't experienced it.

Later, smallpox ravaged the palace, and young Xuan Ye was sent outside to avoid the disease, a stay that lasted several years. She lived in constant fear, dreading news of her child's illness. During this time, Consort Dong'e entered the palace. The Shunzhi Emperor fell in love with her at first sight, and from then on, all the other concubines paled in comparison.

She didn't hate Consort Dong'e. She knew she had never received the Emperor's favor, so she couldn't truly say she had lost him. She simply continued to endure that loneliness, guarding her son whom she didn't know when she would see again.

In the eighteenth year of the Shunzhi Emperor's reign, he died at the young age of 24. Eight-year-old Xuan Ye ascended the throne, and she was honored as the Empress Dowager. That was the highest point in her life, and also her happiest time—finally, she could spend every day with her son. Unfortunately, this happiness was short-lived. In February of the second year of Kangxi's reign, she fell ill and passed away at the young age of 24.

Her life was devoid of earth-shattering love, without any dramatic legends, only a long wait in the deep palace and a son who eventually ascended the throne. Yet, this unloved woman gave birth to the wise and benevolent Emperor Kangxi; this mother who died young contributed to the century-long glory of the Tong Dynasty.

Her story, thus, faded into the depths of history amidst the vicissitudes of the Qing Dynasty.
