Astronomers may have discovered an enormous Giant Ring stretching more than 3 billion light-years across the universe — and it appears in the same region as two already mysterious structures: the Giant Arc and the Big Ring.
The story began with the discovery of the Giant Arc. Then astronomers found the 1.3-billion-light-year Big Ring nearby. But a new analysis suggests the Giant Arc may actually be part of something much larger: a gigantic ring-like cosmic structure surrounding the Big Ring itself.

If the Giant Ring is confirmed as a real coherent structure, it could raise important questions about the Cosmological Principle — the assumption that the universe becomes statistically uniform on the largest scales.
But there is another side to the story. Cosmological simulations suggest that some enormous-looking structures may form naturally without requiring new physics.
