Two centuries ago, the glens of the Scottish Highlands were deliberately emptied of people to make room for sheep, in one of the largest forced displacements in Western European history. The wild, unpeopled landscape that draws visitors from around the world is not natural at all. It is the residue of that decision, and the low green rectangles in the grass were once homes. But the story did not end there.

This is a journey across the far north of Scotland, from the crofting townships of the Outer Hebrides, where an old way of living on the land never fully broke, to the pine forests of the Cairngorms, where a native wildcat is being pulled back from the edge. Along the way, one word, Highlands, hides two opposite truths: while the far northwest hollows out, other corners are quietly filling back up. In this documentary, discover how communities on islands like Eigg and Assynt did something almost no one thought possible. They bought back the ground beneath their feet, and they stayed.
