The session also covers extensive aquarium maintenance advice, focusing on deep substrate stability, cost-effective filter media, and stocking plans for discus, cichlids, and saltwater systems.
Well, I'm jumping the gun here a little bit,
but we hit a really cool spot.
We're out east of wherever we are, east of Arcadia.
Let's see, nobody's here yet.
Maybe I'll
just, hmm,
well, we're
east of
Arcadia,
Redfish,
Bluefish,
about
half an
hour, and we just hit a spot
that is absolute gangbusters.
we've uh it's a little muddy ditch
an extremely muddy ditch full
of algae i'm going to show it to
you he's just gone nuts did you
give up you got 40 40 in there
and how many in the jar
we don't have 20 anyway this is um a muddy ditch
the mud comes right up to the surface
You cannot push a net through without getting it full of mud.
So show us the technique.
We've developed a technique.
Actually, I developed a technique many years ago.
Because these guys,
they live and breed in less than an inch of water.
Right up on the edge.
So here's the technique.
Put the net in the water.
Give them a place to go.
Right?
and then and then splash scare them
into the net and it works like
a charm the trick with this is
to keep the mud out okay so what i saw i've
been watching them do this what is that a tadpole
what a big tadpole i already hit where we just
were yeah there may not be anything here there's
one right there there's another is two one two
can you see it yeah look at these things there
There's one, there's two.
Let's look at them.
There's another, is that?
No, that's a Gumbasia, I think.
Wow.
I keep finding them in pairs, honestly.
Well, they get up in there in pairs.
They hang out in pairs.
Yeah.
They're probably walking.
So that's the technique.
And we got, these are, I'm pretty sure they're Eleisonrema evergladei.
Pretty little fish, aren't they?
Half an inch long, and that's full grown.
That's as big as they get.
Let me get these two in water.
Isn't that cool?
It's still cool.
Really?
I've got to get back in the van so I can see what we're doing.
Yeah, all right, I'll pull down.
So this is, I've been looking
for a spot like this all day.
Frank's been telling me, pull over, look at that pond.
Pull over there, that's gorgeous water.
He goes on and on and on.
And I just ignore him because I know what I'm looking for.
And we found it, and it is just amazing.
I mean, if we had the gumption and the energy,
we could probably collect 1,000 here easily.
This is maybe 100, probably 200 yards long,
total distance, a 200-yard ditch.
And it's just loaded.
But there's no competition.
yeah if that we probably did 40 yards yeah that's something
and we're right on right on the highway
right on 70 going into Okeechobee
the orange trucks are up and down the road today
they're harvesting orange
in all the fields today all
the groves all right i'm back i'm a muddy mess
but i'm happy gotta find some big bass sunfish
we've got about 70 or 80 yeah we did really well
hello from australia hi paul
and alice is here hello alice gotta jump the gun today but we
got such a cool place i really wanted
to show it off uh it's a good example of what collecting
is really all about it's getting
into those oddball places that you would not otherwise
really want to go because it's nasty i mean i
am muddy i'm i'm mud all over and i i i'm having to
uh wrap my hand today because i erupted
a boil pygmy sunfish yes i think i'm gonna start selling
them online. You may as well. I've got probably a hundred now.
Just tell us some. I think we also
have Okefenokee.
I'm pretty sure we've got both. Hi, Chevy.
Let's see. Anything else cool? Top
Minnows or Killies? We did not get Top Minnows or Killies here.
This is a spot that Top Minnows
killies can't live in it's too dense too shallow
and too dense it's only an inch of water and it's
pure mud with solid algae growing
on the top i mean fish can't swim through it you see little
channels of water kind of going through it
but it's perfect for Etheostoma it's exactly the kind
of environment that they uh that they're looking
for so it's it's ideal and it's given us exactly
what we were looking
for see who else is here
let's see dragon lair
sean who is this again
i have trouble reading anything
that's microscopic just started watching you love your videos
have you ever kept peacock gudgeons yes
and i love them did you mention them in a note earlier
somebody had peacock gudgeons uh giordaniella yes
we have giordaniella we got them back at the shop
we did not get any here but i do have them uh i think i should
be pretty close within another
week or two i ought to be able to start selling pretty much all
of the florida natives with the
exception to some of the other sunfish they're hard to get
and i haven't found a found a spot
for him yet yeah we'll get we'll
get them going uh um let's see
last sunday i was talking about
the channel uh and remarking how it's kind
of going through the roof well it is continuing
to do that um it's it's one video but then i get
the second hit which includes about 25 others
so i i'm getting about uh four to five thousand hits
a day on the one video and then no total of
four to five thousand a day about two thousand on one
and then uh another two thousand on everything
else I've in the last seven days about 800 people
have uh have signed up so it's just really
going gangbusters I figure um I'll start making money
at it at the current rate in about five
years when I hit a million
but it's fun let's see now Texas fish
or Chevy fish bikers and pythons
is here Toronto's been trying to find me on the
stream and he hasn't yet it looks like he still
hasn't I don't know Jordanelle Florida
gorgeous little fish yes Frank eight
in one scoop
reconnecting okay I'm back
a deep substrate um you know blue
people tell me deep substrate is
dangerous let me suggest something to you Juno the people
who are suggesting that who are saying
that ask them if they ever had a deep substrate I'd
be willing to bet they are talking through
their hat because they're flat out wrong welcome
to live chat we did that we've gotten a bit of
subscribers see yeah I doubled I've I was at 2200 this morning
I've gotten almost a thousand in the last
eight to ten days uh bikers and pythons right see
Chewie's gonna be doing something in half an hour
oh he's kind of bummed Texas fish I'm kind
of bummed that puts a red river pupfish on the
threatened species, so now I can't work with it.
That is a bummer. Call your fisheries department
and see if you can get a permit to raise them
Most fisheries departments will do that, which
will give you essentially a license to be able to collect them.
That is doable. Talk to them
until you get to the right person
or work through a local university biology
department see if they're willing
to help you can get around that as a as a
breeder hobbyist you can
also get a permit typically for a hundred dollars a
a year as a farm
in most states.
Who is this? Kay. Hi, Kay.
Excited to be virtually
collecting
with us.
Who else is here?
Sam Dam.
Hello, hello. Okay,
we can go forward now.
Yeah, I'm back.
Well, you know, who said this?
This is a really good point.
Jordanella says that a deep sub-surface
is only dangerous if you've got big fish come
in and dig it up suddenly after it's been undisturbed for years.
Well, you know, that's really true.
You've got to use a bit of common sense
if you're going to do something like this.
It's a fairly delicate thing.
now by delicate i don't mean that it can crash
and burn i mean you can't mess with it you have
to kind of leave it alone mark is a new subscriber
loves the channel we love you too mark glad you
found us paul just changed from bare bottom
to five inch sand all right what should it do with
the box filter and the sponge filter. I like to use them.
I use sponge filters in all of my tanks.
Occasionally, just for show, I'll have no filter,
but I find that the sponge filters
are always beneficial. Can you give a shout out
to my beautiful wife, Amy Seymour? We just got
married and she's my world i'm a lucky guy almost
look she lets me buy whatever tank i want uh amy
there's there's amy dear you need
to understand something the way
this works is he gets to buy
a tank when
a commensurate gift comes your way.
So it's quid pro quo, if you like.
If he wants a
big tank, he's got to get you something
of comparable value.
Now, Chimo Blue, what you
need to understand is that if you really want
to grow your hobby, you need to get Amy fired up,
excited, and involved in the hobby.
so take her into the fish store and buy her whatever she wants
and help her learn to keep it.
In other words, get her excited about it. The reality is that couples
who do fish are are almost always successful
because they develop a natural division of labor
in which the guy is doing all the mechanical stuff
and the gal is doing all of the uh the
maternal it's a maternal paternal kind
of division she's doing the feeding and the care
and the maintenance he's doing the keeping it all working
and flowing and in good repair
that works out really really well particularly
as you get more complex systems like coral reef tanks
where it really becomes important to have that division of labor
so congrats guys proud of you
i hope you enjoy doing
the hobby together mark honert hello
my favorite florida native oh
ellisoma absolutely i'm just nuts for him uh cara chara
do you know how corys affect a deep sand
bed my corys make the tank murky even with just two
in the bed um you need more sand you need
a minimum of two and if it's murky
or cloudy add another inch and keep adding it until it stops
doing that the corys should never make it murky
if you're doing sand and the sand is murky
then you need to cap that sand with more sand
and just get it deep enough that you get the murk
down below the level of the cap the cap
is the relatively clean sand that's an inch to two inches
on top of the dirty sand
so if you get all that that's the deal big eyes hey good to see you
there you were going to say take
her into the bedroom you don't need that kind of who said that
You don't need that kind of command, do you?
Now.
I mean, that's between you guys.
Just work it out.
What I said is, take her to the fish store.
Because that's going to grow your hobby.
All this other stuff just grows the mouths to feed.
Oh, who's this?
Kay? Kay? J.K.?
Okay, I can't read.
Kay and Beaufort?
Greetings, Maestro.
Started using liquid carbon.
Healthy plants, no algae.
You miss your algae.
I've never used liquid carbon.
You know, Blue, only joking.
I'm sure you are.
I'm sure you are.
I'm sure I would be too.
Uh-huh.
I love your videos.
Thank you.
This is K.A.
K.A. Basement.
Basement?
Okay.
Charlie!
Uh-huh.
maybe I'll consolidate my other dice with minimal sand hard to get it
currently oh god let's see
my my juice I've got 15% battery I'm gonna plug this
sucker in or I'll be dead in a minute give me
a second here I'm gonna get
plugged in I mean
all right we're back
and we got juice
22 here 15 likes
uh any kind of sand will
do clara beach sand desert sand
uh any kind of sand sand is sand
just any sand will do giordaniella eventually
the light dusty sand should settle in
of the substrate and quit making things cloudy
that's absolutely right absolutely right you you
can take over here anytime, Jordanella. You nailed it.
Jamie Lee says, hello. Hello, Jamie Lee. You
look really cute. Your picture on my phone is about
a sixteenth of an inch, but you look cute.
Liquid carbon.
It's just diluted glutaraldehyde.
I don't know what that is. It's a biocide.
Works by of course
Not really healthy.
It sounds like alcohol will work too.
I think I'm going to go with the deep substrate.
Never do it before.
And people tell me it's a bad idea, but I believe you.
All right.
That's what we're doing.
We're turning the world.
It's you and me.
It's all of us against the world.
Right.
And we're going to win.
Jordan Ella. Yeah, but it was, it was, it was valid,
meaningful, legitimate, and appropriate
help. And that doesn't always happen, Jordan Ella.
Good job. Stephan Law says hi. Hi, Stephan Law.
Nice to see you. So I'm having trouble getting a new video.
I've got a couple of videos I want to
do. The shop has been so busy. I've been straight out non-stop.
I mean, it's gangbusters. I'm doing
more business in the last two weeks than I've done
in any other two-week period
since I've been open. But it's just, it's straight out.
I don't have time to do anything and I gotta
get some videos made. So I'm working on it.
Can you use kids play sand?
You can use it if you put
it in the tank dry before you put water in.
And then put the water in very carefully so you don't
stir it up. Play sand has a lot of clay in it.
It tends to be very dirty, dusty, a lot of fine
particulate matter. So just be careful.
If you're going to put it
in after you've got water in,
then you need to rinse it heavily. It's good sand.
It's fine. It's just got a lot of clay.
clay is very beneficial uh but you want to put it
in before you add water father fish in the wind
Who said that? That's funny, Kaylor figures.
Right, how long to wait for a saltwater video?
Oh dear, sand dam, well you know I, yeah it's
a good question, I need to get something together
and I haven't yet, I've just, I've
been buying freshwater fish, I just got um, lord how many
two dozen German discus, really really nice, I just ordered
a bunch of Tanganyika cichlids
they'll be in tomorrow, so that's a bundle
of money right there, I got to get one more order of plants
and then I don't remember what I'm doing next
but it might be salt water, I need to get the salt
water going, I finally, I've got
the tanks all clean, they're ready for fish, um I've got a couple
of good coral tanks that are doing pretty well
so I'll, I'll be doing it, um maybe give me a week or
two. I should be ready in a week or two to do salt water.
Can you use, we did that. We did that.
I have a snail outbreak. Will one assassin snail work?
Yeah, it'll take a while, but one will work.
Two will work twice as well. Three will work that much better.
Get four or five if you've got
hundreds of snails,
and that'll take care of it in a reasonable amount of time. K.A.,
I also use a deep substrate,
five centimeters of substrate on bottom and five centimeters of sand
and on top five cm of three mm sand. That's nice.
Yeah, I like that. The really super fine sand,
I've used it as a double cap as well.
And I really like the look of it. I like the feel of it.
It just, I haven't recommended it
because that superfine sand's a little hard, a little hard to find.
But I think concrete sand is the right structure.
I just got an order
of it, so let's see.
Sand dam, just talk about the mechanics.
Organics, okay, I'll do that.
I'll do that.
I need to do that.
And what I can do is take you over to visit a good friend of mine
who has a coral farm.
And he's just loaded with information.
His name is Brian.
We'll do some salt stuff.
I think a lot of people will appreciate that.
Sam says the demo could wait.
And Jordan Ellis wants to know how I do salt.
I'm like Father Fish up and out of Kalar.
Yeah, that's right.
The pair of us.
Up and at them.
That's it.
Texas fish.
I found if you wash just the top inch,
it'll keep your tank much cleaner.
And you get the benefit of the clay on the lower part.
Yeah, that makes sense.
That makes sense.
But I'm digging the hole for the pond.
Dragon layer.
Filled it halfway and it's not level.
Oh, dear God.
So trading back to finish it.
Finesse it, he says.
That is finessing. You're absolutely right.
How we doing there Frank? Frank has been
collecting his butt off back there. I'm getting plants now.
Oh, we got plants. Yeah, there are some neat
plants here. Did you see those little tiny...
Yes, right. You know what?
You can tell where the sand is because that's where it is.
It's not anywhere where the silt is in a thick layer.
That makes sense. They look really cool. You got some of that?
Yeah, I got a bunch of them.
Great, great.
All right,
so Greg's going to take over driving here.
And I'm going to switch over to the other side
of the car as soon as he's ready.
He ain't ready yet.
Good day, Father Fish.
Chewy, hi, Chewy.
Nice to see you.
See, you keep going here.
I'm keeping up pretty well, I think.
I don't know what I've missed.
Somebody keeps calling me.
I'm using all my high-speed.
I need to do something about that. Buy more, I guess.
Have I heard of BioHome Ultra Media?
If so, what do you think of it? No, I have not.
I don't, I'm not into any of the prepared medias. I do my own.
I just don't want to spend the money on it,
frankly, because I do, I do so many tanks
that it would cost me a fortune if I had to buy it all.
and uh you know at a given point
in time it doesn't make any difference it's all the same
after about six months you really haven't got
anything more than you would with dirt my phone's
temperature is too high charging will continue oh
it stopped charging okay just unplug the charger
i better leave it back in my battery power is at eight
percent i may die here folks charging stopped
because temperature is too high and i'm 80 percent
so we may i may lose you see a planted salt tank
i really love it i do as much macroalgae as i can
and i try to get local stuff from here in the gulf
my favorite media my favorite media
oh i don't know my favorite media
probably peat moss oh thanks yeah
the van has some crown molding
in it a little just a little nuts
uh been using yeah no we're ready been using collected
white pumice for my media
that my dad collects from lava fields oh that's
cool nice i think i'm i think i'm going downhill
here now i'm losing juice and it stopped charging
because it overheated and i'm down to about three
percent so i may lose everybody momentarily we've
been online for about half an hour i'll tell you
what if we drop off let me do this anyway let me cut off for now
and i'm going to come back on it
about half an hour because we're going over to Okefenokee
and I know Okeechobee
I'm sorry we're going to Okeechobee Lake
and I want to show you some of that so
let me sign off for now what we'll pick back up
in about a half an hour see you
all soon
thanks bye bye
