A look at Love Power & Sacrifice by photographer John Angerson.

John Angerson's Love, Power, Sacrifice is the result of more than twenty years documenting the Jesus Army, a Christian evangelical movement founded in Northamptonshire that combined communal living, evangelical outreach and large scale social programmes. Published by Dewi Lewis in 2007, the book provides an extended photographic study of the community during a period when it had grown into one of Britain's most distinctive independent religious organisations. Rather than approaching the subject as an outsider seeking spectacle, Angerson developed long term access that allowed him to photograph daily life, worship, work and relationships within the movement over many years.

The photographs examine the complex relationship between faith, authority and community, documenting religious ceremonies, communal households, evangelism and the routines of everyday life. Angerson avoids reducing the Jesus Army to either celebration or criticism, instead presenting a sustained documentary record that encourages viewers to consider how belief systems shape identity, commitment and social organisation. Produced before the movement's collapse and subsequent safeguarding investigations, Love, Power, Sacrifice remains an important historical document of a religious community that occupied a distinctive place within Britain's contemporary social and religious landscape.
