A Marblehead teen who passed away from a sudden brain hemorrhage
honored tonight by the Boston Celtics.
Boston 25's Carly Dion tells us Owen Coyne was an organ donor.
We're just so happy to be here to honor Owen.
The Coyne family bonding together three weeks since they lost
their oldest son, Owen.
The 17-year-old passed away unexpectedly due
to complications from a brain bleed.
Everything's still so raw. It's only
been three weeks since his passing.
but this just seemed like such a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Through their grief, they got to experience moments of joy
at the Celtics' home opener, honoring Owen's legacy as a hero.
It's really been the first time that the five of us
have done something together in our new formation.
He is our hero, and he has been a hero for so many people.
The Celtics presenting Owen's family with the Heroes Among Us Award,
which recognizes individuals
who made an overwhelming impact in their community.
He would be tickled pink or tickled green,
I guess, to be here and to be honored.
A little overwhelming, but it will be very cool.
A few months before he passed, Owen became an organ donor.
The doctors told his parents his organs went on to save five lives.
I'm very proud of him.
Owen Coyne has tonight's hero over us.
A standing ovation for a resilient family, putting on a brave face
as they try to move forward, keeping Owen with them always.
It's just a special night for us because,
you know, although it's now just the five of us,
we do feel his, we do feel Owen's presence, right?
We feel Owen's presence even though he's not here with us.
He's a really good big brother.
He was the best big brother I could ever have.
Friends of the Coyne family continue to raise money
to start a scholarship fund in Owen's honor.
and you can find more information about that on our website.
On scene in Boston, Carly Dion for your local station, Boston 25 News.
