I decided to share with you our travels to New York, and as always we went to try some of the Russian Food places in Brooklyn and New York! I hope you enjoy these, let me know which one would you want to try ;)
We went to Volna, Marivanna and Varenichnaya! Have you been? This video is NOT SPONSORED IN ANY WAY! I wish :D
Two travelers explore Russian cuisine in New York City, visiting various spots in Brighton Beach and beyond. After a disappointing first experience with authentic-style dishes, they find better quality at a second restaurant and enjoy traditional street food and a high-end dinner party.
Good morning. We are on our way to Brooklyn.
Yeah, we're going to the Brooklyn first time.
Okay, so we did arrive in Brighton Beach in Brooklyn
and straight away there's like Russians
everywhere. You can hear them.
I just want to film the buns. So this is says
you can get all sorts of things over here
with different fillings and you've
got even Khachapuri and this is just
a fresh one that's just been made look at
that just been brought over Wow
with egg there it is the first one
Tel Avivi, vareniki, shashlyk.
So that's uh this is the place Varenitsa. Should we go in Flora?
It looks very interesting.
Nice and small. Oh very nice and homey.
This is all in Russian so you can get all different things
and then they have English translation on the other side.
So you've got dumplings,
vareniki soup salads hot entries blinis kebabs side dishes compote
is a fruity drink this is cool
i'm excited to try all this Flora are you excited yeah there's
an english version so this is our
first course it looks interesting it doesn't look
the color that i was thinking for isn't it yeah
yeah yeah it's supposed to be red so we just had borscht
and it's very different it had like red
have cream type that is um has like giant chunks of potato it's
not like this traditional
one that i'm used to but there's like literally
two three hundred variations of porsche so now
this came pork tomatoes these are manti manti
so these are different ones um never seen them like this
so we're just waiting for sour cream
and usually you eat them with your hand but i'm not sure what
we're gonna do with these yeah i'm not sure
i'm not sure how we're gonna do that
let's dig in you're supposed to eat
with hand but yeah oh lovely
very good oh there's some sour
cream if you want oh yeah wow that looks like
some yeah good good yeah it's very meaty yeah
let's try this mm-hmm it's
good it's warm it shows
a bit thick
sour cream on my shirt you don't all right yeah
not bad yeah oh nice so these are oh they look
really cute these are the siberian dumplings
and these are the potato vareniki and i think
we're gonna have the cherries for the dessert
oh yeah dip in the sour cream oh there's extra
something yeah cheers see what you think oh
no yeah something makes a different is it yeah
can taste vinegar oh no way yeah
um that didn't go well they had
vinegar i hate vinegar like
literally i just had the flavors that i had to spit that out
so i didn't want to film that
so i'm not going to actually be eating anymore even
though they look nice just i'm going to try
the potato one away oh there you go taste
the flavor in my mouth yes you've got caramelized
onion on here and um i'm just going to add a bit
of sour cream i love sour cream yeah usually it
should be a little more sour cream
here all right let's try potato
fillings in the weird it tastes
very powdery all right it doesn't taste like real
potato honestly tastes like the you know that
instant mashed egg one
and that is not really good i'm starting to get disappointed yeah
see what you think maybe i'm just really picky
because i eat this but i could just taste like
a brown potato or do you know what i mean
right it doesn't taste like real potato
no i'm not sure i like it no i don't know i don't know i'm
so disappointed not so good
okay so these are the cherry dumplings
is it is it meant
to be with sour cream oh yeah yeah you can have
oh you're careful they're hot and they're really
hot yeah but the cherry filling is quite nice i
don't think you should go with sour cream
though yeah can you taste the vinegar i'm scared i'm not
sure god so the the cherry vareniki are okay
the dough is extremely over salted and the filling is
nice um yeah this is probably the best dish
so far i mean out of the bunch but yeah no hi guys
so we have actually uh found another russian
place called volna we decided to try dumplings
second time we're gonna go
for the fried version before we got excited about the fried
and we're gonna try that because we did want to try
the pancakes with cottage cheese in the other one
but they didn't have it so luckily actually
for us it's just the food was average below average
there so we're going to try it here yes we'll show you it's actually
a really nice sunny day
and we're right on the beach
so we got our drink it comes in a nice cool glass
okay flory have you tried compote before i think i haven't oh
my god matches your top oh yeah
yeah i think it's supposed to
be but sometimes they don't make it
too sweet let's try i know right
refreshing there's a lot of different fruit
in here it's nice actually it's good yeah
good start so far guys
so we're here at our second place we ordered fried dumplings
so these are the meats they look good we shall try
do we need some sour cream yeah we do need
sour cream that's a good shot
for the view yeah we just got ourselves and we had to
ask for sour cream so I don't think
the dish comes with sour cream so you need
to ask for it it's
a very thick sour cream all right oh yeah it is
It's like, oh, I think that's cream cheese.
Let's try.
Definitely tastes better.
It's much better.
Oh my god, it's so much better.
It's so much better.
It's just good.
Definitely the first one.
It's like really crispy in there.
It's not really crispy.
Very crispy outside, nice juicy filling in the middle.
Approved.
this is our second dish this is how it looks we even got the jam
so they look really really nice
actually gonna have to cut inside
and see how it looks i wouldn't say it's a lot of
cottage cheese filling no it doesn't very
not generous amount but it's nice
very nice so what i'm gonna do i'm gonna add a bit
of jam on there the jam looks very interesting
it looks more american actually than russian you see it's got like
a jellifying it's quite um
It's quite sunny, so it's hard to see the consistency.
It smells like a bit of sour cream.
To top it all off.
Right, now we're going to try it.
The jam is definitely not Russian.
Yeah, I was going to say.
This is quite nice, but I wouldn't say this is Russian.
Yeah, it doesn't taste very Russian.
At all. It's lovely.
I'm going to try the cottage cheese.
filling
you know what's interesting the cottage
cheese filling actually is salty
okay it's interesting like salty sweet
it tastes more like a cheesecake
cheesecake with pancakes
definitely doesn't taste russian i don't know why
it's okay it's not like
the best i've ever tried you know what i mean
so we met bill and jill right jim jim sorry jim and jill
and they offered to uh for us to try another set
of uh crepe here filled with apple flour
do you want to cut that through let's have a look
okay it's got like apple filling type it actually
looks like apple filling that's definitely more
American than Russian, let's try a little bit of this, it looks good
and that's it's cream i don't
think that's that's cream rather than yeah apple pie
and the pancake yeah again
it's quite nice actually
but um i wouldn't say it's a no it's definitely not sure a little bit
it's definitely i can see the filling
because you know i used to get these i'm ashamed to say this
but i used to get these like apple pies from McDonald's
so it looks exactly like this oh no
back in the day it's not gonna be the same
though it's very nice it's nice yeah it's good
right guys we are on a train
to and we stopped by to get
a traditional pie so
it's it's the rash
and it's made with meat oh my god smells very strongly and
it's looking like that Flory's never tried it before
so what we're gonna do
you can actually start biting it.
It smells very meaty.
It's very good. It's like the dough really
smells like in a good way, I think.
But she's never tried it.
When you get to the meaty part.
No, it's good. I would say it's quite heavy.
Yeah, it's like basically a doughnut.
It's a very popular Russian street food.
And actually we did visit a lady before, didn't we?
In the very beginning of this trip.
It's actually still very full, isn't it?
Dough.
We got a little dough.
The dough is really nice, isn't it?
Yeah, it is. It's very heavy.
I can see the meat. Hang on.
I'm gonna get that.
It's very nice.
Did it say it was beef?
I don't think it's pork. Yeah, it's definitely not beef.
It's definitely not beef. It's pork.
It's really nice. What do you think?
Yeah, it's nice. It's very big. Look at that.
It's very heavy.
We had a lot of food already today. We had a lot of food.
It's very heavy. Honey, this was only like
$3, $3.50.
three dollars fifty. Yeah my God look my lips they're like shiny
from them all right guys but you
definitely must try this it's a must I think this one is a must
guys so I decided to try another Russian restaurant here in New York
Marivanna so we'll see what kind of food they have here
and hopefully better than
the other places I've tried
