Video Summary
AI GeneratedAn HVAC technician investigates a home where one side of the house remains hot while the other is cool. After initially suspecting refrigerant issues, airflow blockages, or a frozen coil, the technician discovers that the problem was not a cooling failure, but rather a malfunctioning heat strip that was actively heating one area of the home.
Guys, in the video I'm going to put together for you today,
it was a real head scratcher.
What the homeowners were telling me caused me
to look everywhere except where the problem was.
A lot of times, if you listen to the homeowners,
they can pretty much tell you what the problem is.
But this time, they caused me to chase my tail.
So no, I'm not going to tell you what it is.
You're going to have to watch. Here it comes.
all right
in this one i had to come
so far out in the country i did
not even know what county i was
in this is mitchell county down in south georgia
which is basically like two counties away and one
side of the house
is really hot that is nice
and cold i think we need
to make a trip under the
house look what was in here that could have shortened
to the cabinet how about this this
customer is letting me drive right up
to the air conditioner I just have to stay
away from the septic tank right now
we're I'm just gonna park right in front
of this access so we can go under
the house here's my air handler under there
and as far
as crawl
spaces go this
one ain't bad
at all I gotta
put on some
gloves
to keep from
putting my
hands down
in the dirt
she said the
house one
side
of the house
where the
thermostat
is stays hot
and it was 81
degrees
in there it
looks like
we're gonna have two
branches i just want
to look at things first
and i see
my return there
let's walk
around
and take
a look at
the other
side all
right
getting
to where
a damper
might be
let's see just
by design i don't see where
they would have difficulty
on this side of the house
it's a
possibility
that
some
well
that
box is
insulated
on the
outside
i got
no
idea
how
much
of
that
is
usable
by
the
way
i do
pull
up
my
mask
when
i'm
down
in
places
like
this
fantastic
all
right
let's
see if
we can
find
a way
to get
a peek
at this
coil
what
i see
on that
coil is
it's clean i've seen
y'all have now seen more
of that that coil
than i can see
but it looked clean
i
don't
see
nothing
in the
return
something
else
has
got
to be
going
on
let's
see oh
my
there's
still
a
screw
in it
all
right
i'm
not
seeing
anything
obvious
down
here
that's
not
enough
to cause
our problem
no dampers
all right
let's go back
out and check
pressures we
got us a 2007
r22
unit
here
two
and a
half
tons
temperature
is
close
to
freezing
272 62
that
head
pressure
is a little high considering how low the suction
is what do you want to bet if i wash this coil out
that pressure is going to drop and it's going
to clearly be low on freon there's one way to find
out all
right
that
coal
was not
dirty
let's go
in and
start
checking
the
register
she
is not
correct when i went around and checked the airflow
the airflow on this side of the house was clearly
poor and um i did put the old thermostat back
on the wall but i'm afraid it may have been icing up
the temperature of the suction line relative
to how hot it was in there and those pressures i
think that suction line should have
been warm i'm gonna check my probes but that's my supply
and that's my return this was in the hottest room in the house
but this may require a trip
underneath it is running in cool maybe i can get
a better picture of that coil to see if there is
any ice on it
well we are back
down here these
gloves when
i'm crawling
around let's see
if i
missed
something
seeing
any ice
if i
leave
that
panel
off
long
enough
i will
that's
it
that's
in
the hottest room in the house
and it's hotter in there than it
is at the return dang it i didn't
bring
my my
meter
the
wheel
lights
up put
this
panel
off
see
to try
to see
which
one is
pulling
possible i do want
to know which one
is pulling we can
disconnect it
the way
this is set up it's
easier
to
replace
the
whole
heater
kit
so i
know
it's
that
way
and
the
bottom
down
there
well
it
wasn't
just hot
in that
room
the heat
was on
you just
see the
difference
in my
return
and my
supply
that was in the hottest room
with the least air flow pressures are still
normal I only figured it out I was
chasing my tail because once I had the
house was hot the other side was cool there
was less air flow that I could
feel you know thought maybe it was freezing up
but it was the heat strip
and between you
and me those are the kind of calls that I like because it's
like an investigation
when you find it it's a it's a satisfying feeling
Thanks for watching, and I'll catch you on the next one.
