We begin with a developing story here in France.
One person has been killed
and several others wounded in a shooting in a Paris suburb.
French authorities say gunshots were fired
from a vehicle near the town of Trappes
and the suspect has been arrested and taken into custody.
Police said the motive remains unclear,
but the mayor of Trappes says it's likely
to be a racially motivated Islamophobic incident.
Let's hear first from the Interior Minister,
Laurent Nuñez, speaking a little earlier.
There is no intention to conceal anything in this matter.
The prosecutor opened an inquiry for murder,
for attempted terrorist murder,
due to the presumed or real origins of the people.
For more on that now, we have France 24's
Ketevan Gojastani joining us in the studio.
So, Ketavan, what is the latest we know at this stage?
Well, look, the interior minister confirmed some of the elements
that had been put out by the French authorities.
The fact that there are five victims,
one person was killed in this attack, four injured,
including at least one critically wounded.
That's the 12-year-old girl that the mayor
of Trappes says was between life and death.
We don't know exactly currently what her status is.
The interior minister also confirming that the suspect had
been arrested in a town nearby where the attacks happened.
And that the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office was currently
investigating this attack, that it was seeing it as a terrorist crime,
but they were investigating the racial motivation possibly behind it
to determine exactly what the motives were.
And that's one of the things we don't know just yet is exactly what
that motive for the suspect was to shoot at these people.
There are still questions as to who exactly the suspect is.
What we know so far is that he's a 39-year-old male.
That's pretty much all we know for a fact right now.
There are a lot of pieces of information going around on social media,
but confirmed by the authorities.
That's all we know.
And we don't exactly know the identities
of the other victims of this shooting.
But what the interior minister really made clear
is that this was being treated as a terror attack
and that this was being currently investigating
to determine exactly what went on during these attacks,
these shootings, because there were, it seems,
two locations in and around that city of Trappes.
I heard comments on that from the mayor of Trappes speaking earlier.
Let's first take a listen to what he said.
We have witnessed a racist, probably Islamophobic attack.
The people targeted today could have been my mother,
my brothers, my stepsisters.
We must all be clear about the fact that the rhetoric
which ideologically fuels those capable of carrying out such attacks
is criminal and must be condemned as such.
The comments there
by the mayor of Trappes.
Ketivan, help us just contextualize all of this a little bit,
because it comes, of course,
just a day before new protests are planned.
Is this incident then likely to pile onto an already massive pressure,
just from a security point of view?
Look, it's definitely happening at a time
of heightened tensions in France,
and I think that was partly what the mayor was trying to get at.
There were two elements to what he said
in his short remarks to reporters.
One was what we just heard, which is that in his eyes,
this was very likely, probably,
even though he puts the conditional,
he uses the conditional tense, he insists that this
was Islamophobic in nature.
That was very likely.
And what he says about this could have been my mother,
my cousin or something like that
It's because he himself is of Moroccan descent and the city of Trappes,
the communities around there are largely immigrant communities,
largely Muslim communities.
And it seems to at least to what he's hinting at,
that this was very likely motivated by Islamophobia.
Those were his words.
He also, in another part of his statement to the press,
said that we are collectively responsible in what just happened.
and what could happen again in our country.
It's our responsibility.
We have to de-escalate.
It's about Republican concord.
And in the soundbite we just played,
we heard the term rhetoric,
that the rhetoric was in part responsible.
And that is, of course,
targeting some of the political statements
that have been made throughout the day
with political sides trying to recuperate
this attack for political gain.
his message of course is one of de-escalation, thank you for now
