P.E.I. PC Party's official agent charged with 42 offences related to donations, false reports
Oct 23, 2026
RCMP have laid 42 charges against the official agent
of the Progressive Conservative Party of PEI
all related to donations and the handling of them throughout 2025
and police say some of those alleged infractions
were done so knowingly.
And they relate to a number of different things
everything from donations made in excess of what the Act permits
record keeping in terms of receipts
failing to make reports
and knowingly making false reports.
In August, Elections PEI made RCMP aware
of what it calls irregularities
in the PC Party's 2025 donations
and handed over documents for police to review.
Police looked at the cash flows
and receipts into the PC Party for all of 2025.
That has now led to those dozens of charges,
including multiple charges stemming from the same alleged infraction.
The breakdown of some of the charges include eight charges
of knowingly allowing contributions
from a single source which exceeds the allowable limit,
eight charges of knowingly making a false
statement in their annual contribution report,
and nine charges of allowing a person to make
a contribution under this Act who was not permitted to do so,
and then nine receipt-related offenses.
The PC Party issued a statement saying
the party's 2025 contributions were reviewed by
its independent auditor and received a clean audit,
meaning the independent auditor found
its financial statements were accurate
and in line with accounting standards. The matters
identified by Elections PEI arose through
its separate compliance review process. As this
matter is now before the courts,
we will respect the process and provide further comment when
appropriate. And this shows a pattern to me
of a party that seems prepared to color outside the
lines. I reached out to opposition parties.
The Liberals declined, but the Greens say they're
disappointed it's come to this.
You've got to follow the rules. And if you don't follow the
rules when it comes to receiving political donations
and recording them properly, this
is the sort of stuff that can happen.
And the governing party does obviously need to get its
act together. This is a pretty serious series of infractions.
And I don't think it's going to do
any favours for the PC government in trying
to earn back the trust of voters.
Now, those 42 charges are not criminal charges,
they're summary offences,
but each does carry a maximum fine of $1,000.
The person is expected to be in court next week.
