James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Welcome to SDO AIA-193 Angstroms.
We have some serious coronal holes that have formed or reformed,
and they're pretty much earth-facing.
I would expect these coronal holes to generate solar winds
up to about 800 or 900 kilometers per second,
and that should start in about 35 to 40 hours.
Now, some of these coronal holes are already earth-facing,
so we might see winds before that.
This one had closed up, but it's now reopened.
We also have one in the northern hemisphere,
which I don't think will bother us as much as this central one here.
This was taken last night at 9.48 central time, so you can
be assured that this coronal hole is now directly earth-facing.
if we do the math real quickly we're looking at 35
to 45 hours depending on the speed of the solar
winds we also have five sunspots they're already named including
a beta gamma sunspot we're going
to look at and then we have the enormous sunspot it's supposed
to crest the limb tomorrow the 24th
So this is going to be a crazy 12 days or so.
Crazy stuff.
All right, take a neat look at the current sunspots
that the Earth's facing.
It's going to get interesting.
You can say bye to 4474.
It's going around the far limb there.
We have 4470.
It's produced at least one M-flare.
We have a 4475.
It's beta gamma.
and has produced the other three M-class solar flares,
including the M6.9, M7, depending on who you ask.
And then we have three other sunspots here
that are simple as well.
So really totally earth-facing.
We don't have but five sunspots, one being beta-gamma.
Now, if you look real close,
and we will get HMI and magnetogram out,
it looks like there's a sunspot here and up here.
these are probably not going
to be the ginormous sunspot that they're talking about
and of course the coronal hole is weaved throughout
these and i will show you that one last time
here is 4470 here is 4475 here and the rest
of them are as you can see and we have the coronal
hole that kind of weaves through all of them this did close up
but opened back up i guess we could
expect solar winds fairly quickly, based on what we're seeing here.
By the way, the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory just announced that they saw
a huge rock fly between the moon and Earth about two
hours ago, well, 40 feet in diameter,
and they didn't announce it until after the fact, but they
just announced it, and it's not worth me doing,
because obviously we weren't impacted. Closer to
earth than the moon and a good size rock.
Over to SDO HMI magnetogram you can see the sunspot
that I'm talking about here and this was taken
today on the 23rd at 1800 UTC time so this was
just taken just taken a few moments ago you can see all
this other stuff cresting you might even
be able to see it better on SOHO at 284 angstroms
all right this one was taken at 10:06 a.m. this
morning SOHO at 284 angstroms i guess that's going
to be the big boy coming around this is AR4475
that's AR4470 you can see that that coronal hole
is directly earth facing we should see solar winds
I don't know or think that we have an inbound coronal ejection,
although we will check real quickly,
but I guess that is going to be that sunspot
that will be named tomorrow.
It should be fun.
Remember, it takes about 12 days for it to transit the Earth
facing side of our sun.
We'll definitely be dealing with solar winds,
and there's a very good chance of a large solar flare.
They even said X-flare.
today. And first, we have NOAA's Space Weather
Prediction Center completely useless. It doesn't
even show solar winds going over 400 kilometers
per second over the next few days. I'll guarantee
that will happen. And it showed plasma going up to 15 yesterday.
The high was around 4. It doesn't
show any other impacts whatsoever.
The glancing blows you can see here, this looks like a direct
hit here but it doesn't look like it's going
to happen until the 28th was that off of that last
flare that it's about the 28th now
then it was just as bad over at NASA the Parker spiral is
just as bad it has this hit yesterday
which we didn't see any plasma or any geomagnetic activity
lots of being hit yesterday up here
and then nothing after that whatsoever no solar winds
to speak of no nothing so completely useless models both
at NOAA and NASA, my apologies
expect solar winds up between 8
and 900 kilometers per second for the next 35 to 40 hours and or
maybe sooner and there's a very good chance
that we'll have an earth directed flare now they do
have one coming in on the 28th but that would be five
or six days from now and we haven't had a
flare today that would be a really strange deal
as usual god bless folks please share give us a
thumbs up and always remember
that anything's possible these fake models god bless
