Sunshine returns Friday as the former tropical system Josephine pulls away, but temperatures stay cool and gusty, especially across the Cape and Islands. Overnight, temperatures drop into the 30s with frost and freeze concerns.
The weekend brings a warm-up, calmer winds, and gorgeous fall foliage, with peak color across parts of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire. By Sunday, many communities could reach the low to mid-60s before temperatures climb even higher Monday.
Here's your Boston 25 weather expert, Chief Meteorologist Sherry Spear.
Hey, happy Friday, everybody.
Okay, so our weather pattern is shifting a little bit.
This was Josephine. It is no longer a tropical system.
It has fronts. It is headed through the northern Atlantic.
It is a strong storm, but it's pulling away from us,
and we've got high pressure sliding in with all-day sunshine for today.
So it's clear skies. We're starting in the 40s
and even some 30s in the greater Boston area.
Notice high temperatures get into the mid-50s this afternoon.
The winds are probably going to be up around 10,
maybe 15 miles per hour in Boston with some slightly stronger gusts.
Really, the windiest spot today is going
to be far southeastern Mass, Cape and Islands.
That's where we still have gusts 20
to 30 miles per hour into the afternoon.
That also happens to be my cool spot.
So between the lower 50s and a bit of wind,
I do think you're going to need jackets all day down here.
It warms up a little bit, Boston north and west,
with calming winds and that sun, mid-upper 50s.
A little bit cool, definitely cooler than yesterday,
but I think layers will be your friend for sure today.
Overnight tonight, it's going to get cold.
I would expect lows to drop back into the 30s.
We've got frosty, if not freezing, conditions out there.
And then over the weekend, we get a little warm-up.
This is Saturday, this is Sunday, and you'll see upper 50s,
lower 60s tomorrow, more low and mid-60s on Sunday.
the view is going to be gorgeous as well
because we've really got peak and high color happening
across Massachusetts right now.
Central Mass, Southern New Hampshire, you guys are going to
see peak conditions this week.
Don't go far too far north and west as we're past peak. We have a
lot of leaf drop in those areas.
So over the weekend, a couple of things that should be on
your radar. Calm winds for easy leaf cleanup
and frosty mornings as well. Check out these
temperatures. This is more of a metro west forecast,
but you can see Saturday and Sunday
lower 30s, even mid 30s on Monday could lead to some additional frost.
So frost and freeze
concerns out there. You can see where we have
the best chance highlighted in blue for seeing
those conditions both Saturday and Sunday morning.
Our seven day forecast for the weekend always view
continues to warm up into early next week
on Monday with a high of 68. We've got a dry
cold front that comes through Monday night leading
to a cool down starting Tuesday.
