Bottles of hand sanitizer,
temperature screenings, and individual QR codes.
At Lagos airport, health authorities
were doubling down on sanitary measures against Ebola.
Yet despite the precautions, many passengers remained on high alert.
Yeah, I'm scared because we have been hearing about the news.
The way people are dying in the Congo.
So we don't need such a case here in Nigeria.
because Nigeria is a crowded country.
Nigeria on Tuesday reported its first infection
of the new Bundibugyo strain of Ebola,
which is currently spreading in East Africa
and doesn't have an approved vaccine or treatment.
The patient, the wife of a diplomat who had traveled from Uganda,
was being cared for in hospital
and was showing early signs of recovery on Thursday.
Nigeria's health minister, meanwhile,
said authorities remained vigilant,
but struck a reassuring tone,
saying the situation was for now under control.
The high-risk contacts have been quarantined fully in a facility.
We are assuring Nigerians that we are vigilant
and we are not taking anything for granted.
But there is no need for panic.
Nigeria successfully contained its last Ebola outbreak in 2014,
experiencing only 19 contaminations and seven deaths.
The experience has raised hope that Africa's most populous nation
can effectively respond to this new public health threat,
but the World Health Organization on Thursday
called for vigilance over this complex new continental outbreak
which has already killed over 4,000 people in the DRC.
