James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we have a large earthquake down near the South Sandwich Island region,
and it's a magnitude 6.4 earthquake.
USGS thinks it's at about 26 kilometers of depth.
That is basically a plate tectonic boundary and a volcanic range both.
I'd also like to mention that we've had two New Madrid quakes today.
at least two uh and we'll zoom in and take a quick look
at those but the story of the day is this 6.4
magnitude and again it's on a plate tectonic boundary
and on a volcanic range looking at the
greater U.S. we have two New Madrid quakes including this 1.9
and five kilometers southeast of
Richland, Tennessee, he puts it right
on the New Madrid you can really see it come through here
and one just south of that on the New Madrid at 1.9 as well
and Etowah, Arkansas, 11.6 kilometers now these are
New Madrid quakes although they're small jumping over to volcanoes
and earthquakes.com i've put
the plate boundaries on here
and showing you all the active volcanoes in that immediate area we
will remove those and there's actually a break
in the fault if you zoom in here you can see the
fault is broken right there it's trying to come together
and well that's a big reason for this
big quake right there you also have an active
or erupting volcano just to the south here
microvolcano that also has
a decent sized quake over it a 5.4 and I think
y'all could see that break
in the line right there in the red line, let's get some
additional information, some detailed information about
this, the USGS came in
a 6.4 and let's see if they've given it
a depth, we have 26 kilometers of depth
The Raspberry Shake came in at 6.7 and the Australians came in at 6.5.
The Raspberry Shake had a default depth of 10 kilometers.
The Australians came in with a much deeper earthquake at 43 kilometers.
Let's get some details on this situation.
Over to VolcanoDiscovery.com,
we have a very strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake.
That's going to be also the USGS's information.
Looking there,
3.8 atomic bombs worth of energy released with that small earthquake.
Unbelievable.
77 seismic stations picked it up.
Again, a 6.4, 26 kilometers per the USGS.
We will take a look at all the other agencies
and what they have to say about this quake.
now it's a very sparsely populated area
and we only had one report and i thought it was rather
strong as you can see per the intensity
but only one report i thought there were some people living
on this island as well, very very strange i believe
this is a seismic station right here
so only one report on the shake map, all right
let's quickly compare earthquake data from the
different agencies. USGS, a 6.4, 26 kilometers.
Raspberry Shake, a 6.7, default depth, 10 kilometers.
You can see the asterisks here.
With an asterisk, a depth of 10 kilometers often means the depth of
the quake cannot be determined with sufficient accuracy.
South Sandwich Island, 6.5. The
Australians coming in at 43 kilometers, 27 miles.
It's a deep one, according to them.
We also have the French coming in at 6.09,
give or take, .19, so 6.3 maybe-ish.
We have the Germans coming in at 6.4,
30 kilometers of depth.
We have the Europeans coming in at a 6.4
and 31 kilometers of depth.
And we have the Italians finally coming in at a 6.4 also,
15 kilometers of depth.
So in summary, the only things that we see that are a little bothersome
are the 6.4, 3.9 atomic bombs worth of energy released.
We have the two New Madrid quakes, and then,
strangely enough, we have a 4.9 over here, and,
well, it's in Poland, and I'm hoping it is, in fact,
an earthquake and not anything more nefarious.
I don't know of much going on in Poland that doesn't
look like any kind of range or anything like that.
Very, very bothersome here.
Again, a 4.9 in Poland.
Really, really bothersome.
Especially with all the tension with Belarus and Russia currently.
That said, God bless, folks.
I'm sure it was just a regular earthquake.
