The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC remains one of antiquity's most studied military stands a moment when King Leonidas I of Sparta and roughly 7,000 allies chose a narrow coastal pass over open retreat. What followed was three days of combat that exposed every limit of Persian numerical superiority.

When Xerxes I launched his invasion of Greece, he commanded an army that had swept through Thrace and Macedonia unchallenged. The pass at Thermopylae barely a hundred meters wide at its tightest point stripped that advantage away. The Spartan phalanx rotated fresh ranks into the fight while Persian forces, including the elite Immortals, fell in front of the restored Phocian wall.

The battle turned not on the killing ground, but on a mountain trail. A local man named Ephialtes revealed a hidden path around Mount Callidromos, allowing a Persian flanking force to encircle the Greek position. Leonidas dismissed most of his allies and made his final stand with the Spartans, Thespians, and Thebans who remained fewer than 2,000 men against the full Persian host.
