COME, JOIN THE SHOAL FOR FUN, FOR FRIENDSHIP, AND FOR FISHY CONVERSATION.
In the town
of Baltimore lived a man
of the sea, and he told
his life he served one year
too, till we found a queen, and we smiled,
we found our way, father filled one life's
dream, we all love it, it's his great life's dream,
he keeps his tank so clean, the plants
they are so green. We all love his fluffy beard.
It is so white. His eyes, they are so bright. He
always keeps it tight.
And my friend, no more anymore.
They still snore. Switch him on, replay.
We all love Father Fish's great life dream.
His tanks, they are so clean. His plants,
they are so green we all love his fluffy beard
and it's so white always keeps it tight so bright
good morning guests good
morning and hi joey
and mary in the chat nice
to have you all here
and hello everybody good to see you guys yeah nice
to have you back you've been away for a while
Yeah, I take advantage of my holiday.
Well, I know you had kid things going
on a number of mornings last week.
Yes, they switched the schedule over the holiday for our kids swimming,
but it's back to evenings now.
Oh, that's nice.
They figured if they would do it in the morning,
then we'd have the rest of the day to enjoy our holiday.
Great, great.
Well, I hope everybody had a lovely holiday.
The holiday weekend is over, the two weekends,
so we're kind of back in the traces now.
It's starting to get percolating again.
Looking forward to an exciting new year.
Very excited about the current growth that's going on in the channel.
We're averaging about 100 new subscribers a day,
and our views have gone way up, more than doubled.
So we're at about 5,000 views a day,
which is not a huge channel by any stretch.
But it's growth in the right direction.
So we're very pleased about that.
That's big.
Okay.
Hatrick says she's lurking.
We're going to have a great show.
Mary is taking her daughter to the doctor for an exam.
And somebody is calling me on the phone.
Father Fish.
Hello.
10 o'clock.
Thank you.
All right.
I wanted to come see you.
Right.
Come see me.
Dreamweaver.
Hello, Dreamweaver.
Petraman.
Fish and tank decks.
Tisha.
Oh, Tisha is very excited these days.
She's going to be moving
into her beautiful new home in fairly short order.
I don't know.
a week or two from now already planning
our fish room nice, I'll see it, nice to look forward to
you bet Jay Oliver's, oh thank you Jay Oliver
sharing sharing and facebook uh sharing is is
one way one of the major ways that we have
of reaching people outside um outside our subscription
list. YouTube posts
our links to the subscribers
and not very much beyond that.
The algorithm is set up to be able to break
subscribers into various groups depending on their
activity and if a video gets more play than it's given
to a larger group of subscribers, it's not
automatically sent out to every subscriber. That's not
the way it works. So a very active
video will go out to the entire subscriber list
and if it goes ballistic, it may
get played beyond that, but typically does not. So we
really depend on our subscribers
to share the videos and the
you know, streams and whatnot, in order to be able to reach new people.
Oh, got some family in Bradenton, Michael says.
And I have to make my way to Father Fish sometime soon.
Yeah, Bradenton's about a half an hour north of us.
A little better, not much.
Oh, is it half an hour?
Yeah, it's pretty close, yeah.
Well, the northern, no, it's not even.
If you're all the way up on the North End on 75,
it's about a 40-minute drive to Father Fish from there.
Made that drive a lot of times.
I was just trying to see where it was, how far north it was.
I don't see it on the map.
It is just about one hour south of Tampa.
Okay.
If you see the Braden River,
Braden River is the north end of Bradenton.
It separates Bradenton from Parrish.
Yeah, I did a lot of traveling in that area for soccer.
We went to Clearwater and Tampa and St. Petersburg and Bradenton.
Right.
We had soccer tournaments in Tampa.
Neat.
Yeah, that's all mostly in the Tampa area.
Bradenton's just about one hour south of Tampa.
Yep, I remember visiting Tarpon Springs, too.
That's probably on one of our...
That's further north.
That's almost an hour north of Tampa.
Tarpon Springs is pretty neat.
That's an old Greek fishing village.
There was a movie made about that.
I can't remember what it was called,
But it was about the sponge divers in Tarpon Springs who are
still there and still collecting sponges and selling them.
You can go out on the pier any day and see sponges drying on the docks.
It's really a very, very neat little town.
Nice Greek restaurants.
There's quite an ambiance.
It's a neat little town right on the gulf.
Yep, they were selling sponges when I was there.
Right.
That was probably my first introduction into what the heck is a sponge
and where does it come from?
Right.
They're really neat.
The sponge is actually the skeleton of,
well, a sponge.
It's not a coral, and it's not an algae.
It's actually an animal.
It's not a slug or anything like that.
It's a creature that grows kind of exponentially,
gets bigger and bigger, that filters water.
It's a water-filtering animal with a relatively soft skeleton.
it's skeleton is well sponge spongy um when you
when you take them out you leave them out until
they die and then and then they usually beat them
on the deck to beat off the organic stuff
off and then they soak them a bit to get them clean
but if you leave it in the water it'll rot
It's a natural kind of organic material, sponge,
the sponge material is, that will rot if left in the water.
So synthetic sponges obviously don't do that,
but sponges that are real sponges, once living sponges,
will deteriorate if left in the water.
Petro-Man, when you set up your saltwater tank,
are you going to use RODI water with the salt?
He's asking you, Cassie.
Do you want to respond to that?
Yeah, I did.
I was just planning on using my water.
I want to keep things simple and not go out of my way, I guess.
The issue is,
and it's kind of interesting and really important,
when you set up a saltwater tank,
you can set it up pretty much with any water you have.
If you're setting up a big tank, you may not want to go out
and buy 100 jugs of distilled water or RO water.
I don't want to do that.
So you can fill it up with your tap water and dechlorinate it,
put the salt in, get the salt levels right.
But the best rule of thumb subsequent to that,
following that, is to always top off
and do water changes with RO or DI or distilled water.
And the reason is, as water evaporates, it leaves the minerals behind.
The H2O evaporates.
Whatever minerals are in the water don't evaporate.
They stay in there.
So if you're continuously adding hard alkaline water,
eventually, in a year or two, that water will become so hard,
it'll be difficult to introduce new animals to it.
The fish that are in it, the other animals,
will probably be fine because they will have adapted to it.
But over a long period of time,
that water can become so hard, it becomes like
the Dead Sea or like the Salt Lake in Utah.
It becomes so dense that it no longer can sustain
the same kind of life that it did when you set it up.
So it's important for the sake of avoiding those kinds of
pitfalls to use reverse osmosis water, distilled water,
RO water, water, in other words, that has no minerals in it.
Right to do water changes and to do top offs
Okay, my water
Yeah, we just started adding like chlorine to it,
but it's like such a minimal amount. You can't even
detect it on
With a strip like if you're trying to search,
you know, that's your water. You can't even detect it
Yeah, that's good here in Venice the water the water company adds
free chlorine, which evaporates very quickly.
So if the water sits for an hour or so, the chlorine,
particularly if a bubbler, and there's something to move the water
to get it to the surface where it can
evaporate off or dissipate, it'll be
gone pretty quickly. Yeah, that too.
I'll probably be sitting in that aquarium
for a while before I add any fish in it.
um i do have like a source like i don't need to go out
and buy our water though because we have um
a special filter for our water so that we can drink it
so it's basically like just so filtered
that it's there's nothing left in there
no minerals you know nothing oh that's good pure
water i wouldn't say it's like RO
or DI or distilled it's just like super filtered
But that would take a long time, too, to fill up a 40 with that.
Yeah, exactly.
Let's see.
The other thing I wanted to mention is water that has ammonia in it.
It's referred to as chloramine.
The ammonia is put in the water
in some municipalities to bond with chlorine.
Now, it's basically a very unhealthy thing
to do because both chlorine
and ammonia are extreme toxins
in sufficient quantity they can kill.
One would never drink ammonia or drink chlorine or you'd be dead.
They are put in the water presumably in very tiny amounts,
but the difficulty with adding ammonia to the water
and creating chloramine is that that chloramine molecule
is no longer a gas as it was when it was just chlorine.
It is now a liquid, and it will not evaporate.
It will not dissipate off.
It will stay in the water until the chlorine molecule is broken
and the chlorine is able to gas off.
The ammonia then has to be removed separately.
Typically, it's a small enough amount
that it does not create a problem.
But the very fact that the water is ammoniated is itself
a disturbing trend because it points to a laziness
on the part of municipal water supply companies
that are not willing to measure adequately
the amount of chlorine they're putting in the water
in order to ensure that it is safe.
They simply dump a bunch more chemicals in there
to more or less guarantee that the toxins are going to remain in it
until and after it is delivered to the end user.
So if you are receiving chlorinated water,
I would be prone to call the water supply
and complain bitterly about it.
They will admonish you not to feed that water to your pets,
curiously, because it's considered toxic.
Yet they don't have the same kind of warnings for human consumption.
So it's a bit audacious, to say the least,
that a water company would be poisoning their water
and doing it at all, for that matter,
rather than taking the extra effort to dose
their water properly so that it can be delivered safely.
You had a question about plants earlier
by James.
What did he say?
Can you find it?
Yes.
He would like to know which is easier to grow,
Mario Green or Hornwort?
And he has the Latin names for those plants.
That's a good question.
Easier.
Which one's easier to grow?
Jane Wittes.
Does it grow easier?
Is it easier to grow?
Yeah, I prefer Myrio to hornwort, but on balance,
hornwort is probably easier to grow.
It's a surface plant that is getting light
directly, not diffused through the water.
And so it's going to, it's also exposed to the air.
So it's going to grow the way an immersed plant will.
I just
like it.
better. It's a personal thing. It's an
aesthetic thing. I think Myrio is prettier. I think it looks better.
I like it better as an aquarium plant.
It doesn't cover the water the way
duckweed does and some other surface plants.
Can that be floated or planted in a substrate?
Yeah, it can be put in the substrate.
Did they look the same? I'm not sure.
I know hornwort, but I'm not sure what myriophyllum looks like.
Yeah, let's get a picture up.
I had hornwort and tried it, and the goldfish ate it.
So I didn't get to keep it for very, very long.
Well, now I've done it.
I've got to find it now.
I like hornwort and anything that looks like hornwort.
Yeah, I like it too, actually. Let's see.
I think it's
the nickname.
So that's Miriam.
Looks like a raccoon.
Yeah, it's a stem plant.
I'd say
that looks like hornwort.
The hornwort I had was, like, very thin.
This is Miriam.
Yeah, I'm just comparing it.
I would say it looks like the hornwort.
Say, let me get the hornwort.
I think that's why he's asking,
because I'm sure, like, they look the same.
Which one would be better to try to grow?
Here's hornwort.
I don't know about that one the one
next to it looks like hornwort
is that like what it looks
like out of water I can't see
did we freeze I think we froze
I don't know about that first
picture that second picture for sure is hornwort
and they look the same to me so I'm guessing it's
why is that why you're asking James because they
look similar let's wait for father fish to come
back all right what did I miss I missed anything re-ask
your questions if you'd like and I'll try
to get them asked when father fish comes back okay
yeah they look similar i that's why i figured you
were asking i when i was looking it up i kept seeing Myrio Green
as well and probably wondered
the same thing like which one should i get i don't
know about being hard to keep because like i said
my goldfish ate it um i had little pieces
of it like left over for the longest time
and it got stuck down in the anubias
so i would say it's pretty hardy and probably low light
but you could always try both
see which one does better
the money wort i tried
money wort uh it
didn't work so good for me
this is why it's nice
to have joey up here
or mary so when father fish
loses his speed we're not left all alone
but he seems to like it this way so we're trying it out
this way we'll see if how long it lasts and rohan what
are you starting this year you said you were
going to start
more projects
but i i don't
think i saw you
tell us what
you're starting
what's the
well what do i use for my live stream equipment i have
a desktop computer and two monitors
and the webcam is what i'm using right now uh it has a microphone
but i guess it's horrible
and it sounds like i'm in a tunnel when i use it
so i don't use the webcam mic and i i bought a
separate microphone hopefully it's good i don't know i kind
of keep it at a distance but when i'm
when i'm doing like my videos i keep it this close for my videos
and i talk into it um because
otherwise like my audio doesn't pick up
the best i don't know father fish says i'm always really
loud so i don't keep it close to me or i just keep it
at a normal volume and in the past he's told me
to turn my volume down and then i feel like you guys can't hear me
when i do that so let's see
how much longer are we gonna wait for father fish
a few more minutes the laptop mic and camera work
i believe it would that's what i used
um when i first started streaming with father fish i had
um i had a laptop that well i had two laptops i had
my old one and i had this one one like this
um and that worked fine i don't think you guys complained about
my microphone with that laptop
So the laptops are good, too. And then because I have like an iPhone
and it has this special input with my headphones,
like I couldn't plug in my headphone with a mic into the laptop.
So I never used it with a headphone mic.
So let's see. I hope that answered your question.
I think when you are starting out with the videos
and the streaming you just try to use what you
have and find out where your weaknesses are and try
to um get equipment as you can like add the
equipment you need and my webcam I it's just like
a um you know nothing expensive nothing too fancy
just something off of um amazon what's
the name i can't see the name right now on it i think we
threw the box away but just an inexpensive webcam like I said
though like just get what you
can get the one you think would work for you
if you can afford something that's a little bit nicer
and get what you can afford glitchy
um I would say this webcam I
don't think it's been glitchy
just it had that microphone issue where the audio
was terrible it was hard like I was doing um
my zoom meetings on my phone
and like i could hear the audio really good on my phone but not
good on my laptop so the sound coming out of my laptop
when we were doing zoom meetings was
terrible i couldn't hear the instructor say anything
and i would have to set up my phone
just so i could get better sound
so i could hear it better through my phone speakers because my
laptop speakers were terrible
so sometimes buying um less expensive laptops aren't aren't a good
choice you know like you kind of get what you pay
for you got like really bad speakers so
the string thing at the back and how many tanks
do i have well i i was on here before and these
are the christmas lights that i made out of paper for those of you
who haven't seen um i did talk
about them in my Christmas decorations video um it
was like an idea that I got off of Pinterest
and I was volunteering at my my kid's school
and decided to make those for my youngest son
he was having a Christmas party and um his teacher is a guy
or was a guy last year still is a guy
but he doesn't decorate his room so i was like the house
or the class parent and i took upon
myself to go in there and decorate the classroom
and make it festive for the kids so it could be a
little special for them and i liked them
so much i made sets of them for my house and then yeah i
made more for uh other teachers and staff at the school
who wanted them as well so and then my
tanks i have a 40 gallon that's set up right now in my dining room
and it's right next to another
40 gallon um that's empty and my plan was to make one fresh water
and planted and the other one
salt water so it's just been sitting there waiting
and I've ordered some um I've ordered a light
I've ordered salt what else I've ordered the basics right now
so I can just get it filled
with water um and just taking my time
to do that so that um it's not stressful I guess you know
you're not spending a lot right away
so that's I kind of space things and set a goal and try
not set all up at once, let's see, all right, what
am I missing? It's hard to read the chat when
you're talking, so thank you Rohan. Um, the other tank I have
so I have I guess two tanks set up
that are planted in their fresh water
and the 20 gallon had my goldfish and I rehomed the goldfish
and now I'm trying to set it up just
to be a community tropical fish tank in there, um just
get more smaller fish that I that I'd like
and maybe can't put in the 40 and can like highlight
a a particular uh like nano fish school in that one
um but it's going to be a community tank with
a male betta fish I have right now in there, he's all
by himself right now, let's see what am
I missing? I don't know what happened to Father Fish
so you can see Father Fish has like better
streaming equipment than me
and he still gets kicked off his own stream, normally he's back by
now, this was not a good day I think to give Joey
a day off, come back Joey, does anybody else want to
come up and join me and find the link again
repaste the link, maybe Joey could come up even
though she's taking her day off and lurking, just
a thought, or we can give it 10 more minutes and
and then I saw
a refresh.
I don't know what that was.
I think he's trying to come back.
See, Rohan, I don't like big fish
unless it's a goldfish
I'm not into the cichlids.
I mean, if they stay,
I just like the smaller ones.
And then you can put more of them in your tank, the smaller they are.
I like the idea of having more fish.
Well, thank you.
Thank you, Michael.
I don't mind being up here.
um i like being chatty when i have another co-host
father fish doesn't like us being chatty though
when he's on so i hope you all have had
a good start to your new year mine's been pretty
good i guess i'm gonna try to keep it that way
so the link is there
if anyone would like to i i don't
know if you can click it and join
without father fish you might
have to give you permission yeah
um unfortunately the laptop i wanted i just needed something
that is like a workhorse
um because i do a lot of graphic art
and the program i use is adobe illustrator and i also
use adobe photoshop
when i need to um work on photos um and i've taught myself everything i
know um so it takes a lot of memory
though it takes a whole lot
of um processor um speed and
memory to keep up so i just needed a laptop like
a gaming laptop to keep up with all of that and
those cost a little more
and my husband got me something that i don't think can keep up and i
ended up not using it so i think it'll
be my son's laptop now i don't even know where it is unless
this is it yeah that is it sorry my husband has
a laptop that looks similar so this is the laptop
it's an acer that's the one he got me
um and i don't use it i still use my old one that's about
to die because it still has um adobe illustrator
and all my tools that i need we never got them
installed on that guy
so i see the stream trying
to update i don't know
that's other fish trying
to rejoin
this is unusual normally he comes back
by now yep yep that's your man am i freezing
i i see it do this so maybe i'm freezing
when it does that yep but i wanted an apple i would
love to have
an apple i don't know colder weather
is expected i guess if you live in canada
store lake well to me it's a pond it
is a large pond and it's still
sitting there looking pretty
don't really have any updates
on it i keep hoping for uh
the water water lilies lily pads i don't
know what do you call those water lilies to grow grow
in there i'm blurry i'm really blurry that's
weird clear on my end yeah my neighbor keeps killing
those water lilies so his side is
completely free of water lilies
and being taken over by algae i don't know what to do with that
guy fish they're
in there i i don't see them uh we catch
bass i don't i know we have carp and i
know we have like bluegill fingerlings
um unless i'm out there feeding them every day you don't um
don't see them they don't come up to the edge
blurry that is odd is my water uh is it hard
So, this is where, oh, I don't know, this is where
there's contradiction with the water.
I have really, really high pH, so I have high carbonates.
Oh, I need to drop out maybe.
If I drop out, I'll try that.
But yeah, I'll answer this question and I'll drop out.
I have really high carbonates, but a GH of around 3 to 5,
so my water is soft, but can buffer pH really well.
All right, so Father Fish,
would you like me to close my window and so you can try to get back on?
All right,
I'm going to shut this down.
We'll see what happens.
