A construction worker from the Urals village of Butka, where he was born in 1931, Boris Yeltsin rose to lead the Communist Party in Sverdlovsk and then Moscow, and fell out with Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987. Elected president of the Russian republic in 1991, he opposed the August coup and joined the leaders of Ukraine and Belarus in declaring that the Soviet Union no longer existed. His presidency brought shock therapy, privatisation, the 1993 confrontation with parliament, the First Chechen War and the 1998 financial crisis, amid heart attacks and reports of heavy drinking. He resigned on 31 December 1999, handed power to Vladimir Putin and died in 2007.
