James Kaufman, World
News Report Today.
New study shows that pilots
and flight attendants' deaths from cancer are extremely elevated.
They may have forgot to include heavy business travelers like I
was for over 20 years.
I flew globally for 20 plus years about four times a week for an oil
and gas exploration company.
Of course, I've already told you about the radiation
and how incredibly high it gets the higher your flight travels.
Some flights have 100 times plus, not 100% more of the radiation,
100 times the radiation a human absorbs at ground level.
I will show you at the end of the video the elevated levels of RADs
or Radiation Absorption Doses that are being soaked up
by these professionals and heavy travelers based
on the altitude of their flights at the end of this video.
This summer, French courts decided an issue
that scientists have struggled with for years.
Aviation radiation is real.
We already knew that.
and it increases the risk of cancer in flight crews.
Sophie Leno, 59, flew for Air France for 30 years,
logging more than 12,600 hours in the air.
In July, judges in Bayonne recognized
her cancer as an occupational disease.
A new Harvard study agrees,
concluding that flight crews die of radiation-related cancers
even more often than nuclear workers i guess they forgot
to mention pilots and flight attendants
as one of the most dangerous jobs
in our survey we reviewed last week writing in the august 17th
issue of JAMA International Medicine researchers led
by Michelle Patel of Brigham and Women's
hospital examined nearly 13 million
U.S. death certificates from 2020 to 2024 out of 503
professions. Seen here,
flight attendants ranked number one for deaths via radiation-related
cancers, while pilots ranked number two.
I guess there are just more flight attendants than there
are pilots in the industry which would make up for the skew.
The reason is galactic cosmic rays
and radiation, high energy particles from supernova explosions
and other violent events in the cosmos
pepper Earth's atmosphere from all directions.
This radiation percolates all the way down to
aviation altitudes. Even a single cross-country flight can deliver
as much radiation as five
dental x-rays. International flights,
especially if over the poles, are even worse. Pilots and
flight attendants accumulate three to six millisieverts per year,
according to the CDC.
This is the largest occupational dose of any workforce
in the United States, roughly 10 times
what a just frequent flyer would receive.
Of course, that would depend on how frequent.
The study also looked at aircraft mechanics and assemblers,
people who spent their careers around
airplanes but rarely left the ground.
They were ranked in the middle of the pack out of 503
occupations. They had fewer radiation-related
cancers than flight crews, but they were elevated.
I wonder why they even scored as high as they did,
unless the radiation somehow radiates
the actual outside of the aircraft?
Maybe I don't understand.
For years, the link between aviation radiation and cancer
was complicated by two other potential carcinogens,
working the graveyard shifts and breathing second-hand smoke,
i.e. they used to allow people to smoke on planes.
Both were thought to cause cancer in flight crews.
The new study shows that cosmic rays play maybe
the biggest role of all.
Let's take a look at some flights and see how much radiation
you receive at different altitudes at radsonaplane.com.
All right, I've pulled up a daily chart of some flights so we can see
what type of radiation one would receive at different altitudes.
So what we have here is, well, the top category up here
is about 45,000 feet, and these are your charter flights.
Learjets, bombardiers, not commercial flights.
They regularly don't climb that high.
But FlexJet, ExoJet, they're
receiving 74 times sea level dose,
not 74% more, 74 times the radiation.
These are all at 45,000 feet.
Now, I've seen those charter flights at,
well, much higher dose rates than this.
This is today. If we move down to commercial flights,
they fly from about 35,000 feet to about
41,000 feet, depending on how long of a route.
Well, you see that you receive anywhere from
40 times the radiation you would receive at ground level
to 60 times the radiation you would receive
at ground level. And these are just regular flights
from Chicago to Baltimore, Chicago to
Washington, Los Angeles to Newark, obviously.
And then, well, most flights don't really climb
as high as 41,000 feet.
When we look at a regular flight, it's regularly about 35,000 to 37,000
feet and those flights are receiving about 40 times 40 times
not 40 percent more of the radiation
someone at ground level would receive now we'll look
at short commercial flights notice they're
all one hour or less here and we're talking about short jumps
and these are regularly turbo props
not even jet planes, and they're topping out
at about 27,000, 21,000 to 27,000 feet,
and they're still receiving 15 to 21 times
the radiation that someone at ground level would
receive. Now, they used to have the private planes on here as well.
They'd top out at about 15,000
17,000 feet, and they were about 7 to 12 times
the radiation that you would receive at ground
level. I don't know why that has been removed.
This is just a heads up, folks. The actual
occupation where you have the most chance
of getting cancer later on in life is, well,
in the transportation, air transportation industry.
God bless.
