A journey through depression with this new book Black Dog by photographer Gavan Goulder.

I've been a professional photographer for over 20 years. My love of photography started after watching an incredible sunrise over the Grand Canyon while driving across America in a beaten-up old wreck back in 1986. I was sleeping in the car; it was a cold December night, and I can remember having to wake up every hour to turn the heating on to stop myself from freezing. About an hour before sunrise, I left the cold comfort of my sleeping bag and went into the crisp clean air of the night to watch the sunrise, a moment that would change my life forever. The light rose through the canyon and I watched as the colour of the rocks change as the intensity of the early light danced in front of me. I distinctly remember thinking that I needed to learn photography when I returned home so that I could capture the natural beauty of what I was witnessing.

After graduating I became a photographer for the Telegraph Newspaper which was an amazing 3 years before becoming a full-time freelance photographer for a wide range of premium publications.
My editorial client list includes The Guardian, The Observer Magazine, The Independent Magazine, The Telegraph Weekend, The Evening Standard, Country Life Magazine, Marie Claire, Woman’s Journal, Cornwall Today Magazine,
My Corporate clients include Texaco Oil, Patek Philippe Watches, BMW, Omega Watches, Box Fresh Clothing, Thomas Cook, Rosenblatt Solicitors.

I now live in Cornwall with my family. I used to own and run a unique photography business The Day That
In 2018 I moved on from The Day That and I produced a Photography book “Black Dog” about dealing with a mental health issue. I gave talks about the work in London and various places in Cornwall including Falmouth University BA course in Photography.

I am currently working on a number of projects to do with the Climate Crisis and have volunteered as a photographer for Extinction Rebellion. This has led to a major project “Citizens of Love and Rage” photographing people who have used civil disobedience as a form of protest.
