AI GeneratedThis news segment covers a diverse range of topics centered on Milwaukee life, including housing trends, sports excitement for the Brewers and Bucks, and local culture. It also features practical home hosting and cleaning tips, discussions on modern parenting and community dynamics, and a roundup of celebrity news and public debates regarding pets in public spaces.
Derica, this is news you can use.
All right.
Costco loyalty is taking on a whole new meaning in the housing market.
A new Zillow study shows homebuyers are prioritizing houses
that are just 5 to 15 minutes away from a Costco.
Analysts say that bulk shopping convenience has become such
a big draw that about 3%
of home listings now highlight Costco proximity as a top selling point.
But buyer beware, researchers warn that living too close can
also mean heavy traffic and crowded roads.
So you want to hit that, like, three bears sweet spot of just right.
I get it, though, because when you're looking at my house,
you're looking at all the amenities around it.
And if that's, you know, a frequent stop for you, it makes sense.
What is the first amenity that you guys looked at?
Schools.
Okay.
No, I agree fully.
That's what my parents chose when they were around.
was ours and then we didn't end up going to the schools
in the district that was yeah okay so we
got kind of coaxed into it so it was schools first there
was uh green space parks around that was a
huge thing for us uh and then a convenience to downtown Milwaukee
because having lived in
downtown i still have an affinity for all party cramp like
that yeah you can take the cramp out
of downtown Milwaukee but you cannot take
the downtown Milwaukee out of the party cramp there
you go um just like that i think when i
when my parents were looking it was always schools like
resources for my little sister things like
that but like for me as like a bachelorette like i want
a nice shower really i want oh yeah i guess you could
do that on your own but yeah i want to be
hosed off like an elephant
in there i want like jet like you know what the fisler spa you know
it's like a car wash in there you just get like hit
with multiple jets that's what i want okay
In my Barbie dream house.
I think that's fair because to put one in takes time
and a lot of money nowadays.
So if that has that, that's actually a good selling point.
Yeah.
I look for walkability right now.
I mean, this is just me I have to worry about.
Walkability to bars, restaurants, other retail spaces.
And then if it's near, like, a body of water.
True.
Like Lake Michigan.
Not with you.
You feed off the energy of nature.
I think water does that.
You feed off that energy, too.
It's so recharging.
Man, I remember being in that situation.
that you just described.
I tell you what, it was a good time.
Come on now.
Walkability.
I don't think I can live in a landlocked place
that did not have a lake or an ocean nearby.
That was how I felt living in Nashville.
It was like all we had was the Cumberland
that we nicknamed the Cumberland
because it looked like chocolate milk most of the time.
It was a real thick river.
And it does affect the way that you feel.
Now, granted, Tennessee is like a gorgeous landscape,
greenery, Don, you know that.
There's something about seeing Lake Michigan.
I don't know what it is,
but it just makes you feel so at peace.
It's almost like your problems get smaller
because you're faced with this, like, greatness.
You realize...
There's a sunrise over it.
There's a sunset over it.
There she is.
This is a cool view, though, too.
It made me feel like I was in a plane descending all morning.
No, for real.
The fog is lifting.
That's too good.
Shall we get into the weather?
Yes, it's time.
Let's do it, guys.
And we are going to talk about something major here.
It is official.
The Brewers are now set to take on the Rays,
the Tampa Bay Rays, in the World Series.
And this is really cool, too.
History will be made.
Neither team has ever won the World Series.
So it will also be a game of familiar faces.
If you know, you know.
The starting pitchers for Game 1 have not been announced just yet.
But it wouldn't be surprising if former Brewer
and ALCS MVP Freddie Peralta was not on the mound for the Rays.
So this will be cool.
You know what else is kind of a cool touch here, too?
Jake Bowers also used to play for the Tampa Bay Rays.
And so his former team's coming home,
and then we're playing Freddie Peralta, you know, as his former team.
So it's kind of a cool, like, element there for both teams.
It's weird.
But then it was like this morning there was an interview
with Freddie Peralta when they asked him about,
you know, going back to Milwaukee or whatever.
And he said, look, that city launched my career.
It will always be special to me.
And I love to hear that because I think it is just a business.
Like, I know we all kind of got upset
when Craig Counsell went to Chicago.
And obviously, we've done really, we've done just fine without him.
But it is a business.
Yeah, it is a business.
But it's cool to see those connections
that you once had for those folks here.
You heard the folks in the locker room.
They're like, we're going in Milwaukee.
Let's go.
Yes, you are.
Let's go.
I was the first person that went to my house.
Like, all right, let's go.
I love that.
What was that?
You know what it reminds me of?
Not to bring this up, but that Stephen Smith.
Do you remember that during the box?
Oh, yeah.
Where he said, oh.
The unfortunate things that were said about Milwaukee.
Oh, yeah.
But then we, like, totally owned it and made T-shirts out of it.
Something like that.
Yeah.
He said, like, the S-word, right?
Yes.
But a nicer version of that.
Yes.
Yeah.
Anyway, so it's nice to hear this positive outlook coming.
Because we are wonderful.
Yeah.
We know that.
Yeah.
And soon everybody else will, too.
Okay, so here's a look at the World Series
schedule and how that's going to look.
So Game 1, Games 1 and 2, excuse me,
are Friday and Saturday at American Family Field.
Then the series moves to Tampa Bay for Games 3 and 4.
If necessary, Game 5 would also be down in Tampa.
Then Games 6 and 7 would be back in Milwaukee.
All of these games start at 7,
and you can watch all of them right here on Fox 6.
We're so grateful for that.
So our coverage is starting, though,
on Friday at 4 o'clock in the evening,
and then we have a special Brewers edition of Fox 6 News at 5.
First pitch, of course, is at 7, and then stay
with us after the game for a special edition of Fox 6 News.
And this is really an exciting time for us
because we're going to, you know, be there a lot.
Yeah, we just left a coverage plan meeting
about what we have working on at the station.
So I'm excited to see nightside, our sports teams, dayside, wake up,
all get involved in making what's going to be history for this city.
And it's going to be a first, too, for certain
generations, you know what I mean?
Kind of going all in on this celebration,
so it's going to be a really good time.
Yeah, I like how we can lean into both generations,
but also remember the past and pull some of those stories out.
Like this one, this was a great story.
Obviously, a lot of excitement
and great stories leading up to the game on Friday.
For two dads, it will be a game that they will never forget.
They were surprised with World Series tickets thanks to their kids.
And Christina Van Zelt explains how the Brewers
are uniting families all over the country.
I don't even know what to say.
Thank you guys. Oh my gosh.
You and me and him.
first disbelief what
is this and then reality hits
these brewers fans are going to Game One
of the world series thanks to their kids
when the emotions poured out um there wasn't a dry
eye in the house miguel maldonado started watching
the brewers in 1970 his family grew up going to
games maldonado wasn't able to go to the world series
in 1982 that changed this time around
his sons surprising him
with the memory of a lifetime there's
so many things that they
sacrificed while we were growing up
and all of that and it's just so awesome to be able to do
this for him they weren't the only family knocking it out
of the park these kids really love me
there's no way jimmy d'amelio lives in south dakota
but his roots are in milwaukee as a kid i used to
ride my bikes to County Stadium.
The longtime Brewers fan looked at tickets for the World
Series and couldn't justify the price,
but his kids had their own plan and surprised him with
a ticket. Both kids serve in the military.
His daughter is in D.C. and his son is overseas.
We've been long distance as a family for a really long time now,
and so just being able to connect
this way has been really beautiful both families didn't just hand dad
a gift they threw a curveball
Christina Van Zelst Fox Six News wow i love
that story meaningful it is so special and it's
something about seeing for me your dad cry yeah oh yeah
my dad is not emotionless but when he cries
like the whole world seems like it just stops like oh
my gosh like he can really he's really
feeling it yeah so i'm sure those dads can appreciate
that as well and even with him
also being long distance he had like
the new gear you know being a top fan i love it
i'm so excited that's happened to both
of those dads out there okay well speaking of the brewer
spirit whitefish bay is showing a lot of it one street
in the village is lined with inflatable
bernie brewer displays some are right in front
of the house others are right along the sidewalk
when everywhere you look there's bernie look at him
if you want to check it out for yourself they
are on lexington boulevard the same homes decorate
with inflatable santas during the christmas season
so maybe you've seen those uh if you've driven
by the area okay i i noticed the santas you can't
miss them because when you drive really anywhere
on lake drive you know you see them yeah i think
i'm here for bernie i like it i like it i kind
of want to go take a selfie with it i know right
go all down the line whitefish bay is down
with inflatables that's hilarious they like them all
What if we could keep that trend going?
I mean, these are going to sell out probably, right?
Keep that trend going.
How far do you think that could go?
Oh, yes.
All the way down.
There was that buy-in.
You'd be that household that doesn't have it.
Like, boo-hoo.
There's always going to be one.
A Rays fan or something.
There's always going to be one, right?
Somebody will poke a pin in that one.
Yeah.
I'm sure.
All right.
So we've got to talk about the Bucs now because they start playing.
Their season starts tomorrow.
Their home opener is on Friday.
So much going on in sports right now.
It makes your head spin.
So sports teams across the state really buzzing.
And the Bucs are now entering the chat.
The team's home opener is this Friday against the Bulls.
Dustin Godsey, the team's chief sales and marketing officer,
shared what he's looking forward to this season yesterday on Fox 6 Now.
We're going into this, what we're calling
the next great era of Bucs basketball
and really starting to build that out.
Coach Taylor Jenkins has been
incredible as we've gotten to work with him
and really understand what his philosophy
is going to be throughout the offseason.
And then you could get a guy like Tyler Hero coming back home
and being able to play in front
of his home team crowd or hometown crowd.
And, you know, Ryan Rollins and all these guys coming back.
I think we're going to have a really exciting, energetic, young team.
All right.
Yeah, I think exciting, energetic, all that.
I'm ready for the season to begin.
They got their team ready to go.
They do.
The Bulls are, you know, it's going
to be interesting to watch these guys, I think, too.
And anybody that plays sports knows that there's always
a cycle of youth coming in to an organization.
This is ours.
We get to witness it.
And hopefully, similar to what happened with Giannis those first years,
there's going to be some issues, obviously.
But hopefully we're going to be cheering at the end of the season.
And I'm hoping the preseason kind of got some jitters out, too.
You know what I mean?
I'm so glad you brought that up.
I went to the Bulls.
I went to their preseason game against the Bulls last week.
And I was like, ooh, defense needs some work.
So hopefully that gets worked out as the season progresses.
Obviously it should, but we'll see.
Either way, they're going to put on a show.
It's always fun to go to a Bucks game,
This year there's new beverages, new food as well.
You can expect those menu items
when you're heading to Fiserv Forum,
Some of the new options include spicy chicken sandwich,
a King's Hawaiian churro bite at the Cluckery,
half-court smashed tacos at the Johnsonville Stand.
Pizza looks pretty good.
Burger from Mecca Burger Bar, brisket elote.
Wait, bring it back.
Bring it back.
Wait, what are you looking at?
I want details on that burger and that brisket.
What does that comprise of?
Let me go to my notes there.
And what's going on?
What's going on at Park Fair?
What do we got here?
That situation.
What's in that?
If we could slow down the things a little bit.
You want to go back to the situation?
I want to go back to the burger and that brisket.
The Mecca Burger Bar will add a Cream City Smash Burger
to its stands at sections 106.
and 116 perfect okay now a smokestack is going
to be there with new brisket elote that's that
smokestack uh palermo's pizza three brand new stands
which is great so a roman style crust
pizza they're gonna have that sometimes you want
more than just like the tenders and oh yeah i
agree like you want it from anywhere yeah they're stepping it up i love
that yes i did notice that
it's getting better yeah i know
and it's not like it's not like a foodie destination i think
the milwaukee brewers have set the tone for what can
be done yes um i do think that that dining is
a little different at Fiserv i think milwaukee you go there
with the idea excuse me the brewers
you go there with the idea that you're going
to tailgate possibly you're going to go you're going
to hunker down there's some serious time you're gonna you know it's
a good how many hours is the
game you're there for two and a half hours right before you need
a bite to eat, the game can go
a little bit quicker, sometimes after dinner as well.
So if you're not eating late, then you don't get that.
I do like their, so, go ahead.
You know what their official wine is?
Is it Dow?
They have Dow.
Oh, I love, that's right.
They are proud of the wine.
That's great, yeah.
No, they're Dow carriers and La Crema.
They got La Crema this year.
Oh, let's go.
Ask me how I know.
You can order your food, though, for me,
because you want to beat those lines at halftime
or between quarters, you know?
I love it.
Delicious food.
There it is, guys.
Thank you, guys.
Okay, still ahead this morning,
help solve a mystery in American Family Field.
The author of a new children's series is joining us live next.
Very timely.
I know.
Excitement about
the Brewers
is happening pretty
much everywhere,
and a children's book series
is celebrating Milwaukee's baseball traditions in a big way.
This is so cool.
Author David A. Kelly joins us live
with more about his ballpark mysteries series.
Brother, this is so cool.
We know you've spent a lot of time in our wonderful city of Milwaukee.
Before we get to the book, what surprised you most about Milwaukee
that helped you write the book?
I think that the thing that surprised me
the most about Milwaukee is actually the fans.
What a great fan base you have for the Brewers
and the rest of your sports teams and so much history.
So the Ballpark Mysteries are a series of books,
mysteries set in baseball stadiums.
And when I got to Milwaukee,
I decided I had to actually write two books about it because you've got
so much history and the fan culture is just so great.
And you probably noticed, too, watching some
of the fan reaction here as we head into the World Series.
Some of the best soundbites that we've had have been from kids
because they're really locked in and really, really excited.
Is that something that you found, too,
was maybe writing a plot line that was going to interest them,
but also maybe teach them something that they didn't already know?
Absolutely. And that's one of the fun things about writing
the ballpark mysteries for me,
is I'm able to mix history and cool facts about the teams
and cool information about the stadium,
like bratwurst and the secret stadium sauce
that you have there as well as mascots like Bernie
Brewer I think maybe I'll have to get one
of those inflatables from my front lawn and Gus the
Wonder Dog, you've got so much cool history
that is really attractive to kids that it helps me kind
of turn the love of baseball into the love of reading
so it hooks the kids with baseball but
gets them hooked on reading
which for me as an author is just wonderful yeah and speaking of
getting kids hooked on reading obviously there's
a local draw here with you know our team um but
i'm looking at some of your other books
with you know Babe Ruth, the baseball curse, what does that
mean for kids being able to kind of read books in a series
or um picking up something that really
piques their interest that will kind
of help them grow throughout you know life i think actually
it's really important so these books are really
for readers in kind of second first second third
grade and they're making the transition
from picture books to books that they actually reading
chapter books and building a series such as the ballpark mysteries
which have 28 books in the
series around topics that the kids get energized about like sports
or like mysteries really helps
hook them and gets them reading more than one book
so in the series they can start with the
first book they can start with the Brewers books
but once they read one book they're going to
discover they loved reading and they want to read
the rest of the series and these fun mysteries are
like not only hooking them with facts but they're
also like um making them think about things you
know giving them that curiosity that they're kind
of tapping into as well yeah now david i love a
good caper right so did you by chance pull
the sausage race chase from an actual news story when
the sausage one of the sausages got stolen just asking
because one of the sausages got stolen
years ago and it was a big thing here
in milwaukee i don't think i knew that you know i didn't so
the sausage race chase, my characters
Mike and Kate, get to the stadium
and they discover they're really excited to see the sausage race.
but when they get to the stadium
they discover that the costumes have been stolen.
So that's the mystery in that book.
And I actually didn't base it upon
that incident that you're talking about.
But I just I knew that the sausage race chase had
to be a real core part of the mystery.
And that's how I came up with it.
Just wanted to make sure you weren't in cahoots with those.
I got nothing to do with it.
But I'm sure you get great feedback from kids on these books.
But I have to hear about what parents tell you, because
as Derek kind of alluded to, it can be hard to get kids to read.
So having a topic that they're interested in has to help really does.
I mean, there's so much competition for adult
and kids eyeballs these days with screens and everything else going
on to get kids interested in reading is tougher than ever.
And that's why I think that books, whether it's sports books
or mystery books like mine or some other subject,
is a great way to get kids into reading.
So you want to give them material that's going to get them excited.
And, you know, reluctant readers,
boys often are a little bit slower to get into reading.
So when you give them something about the Brewers
or one of the other teams or football
or baseball that they're already into, it's actually a natural hook.
And the other thing about these books
is they've got a lot of nonfiction information.
I've got a chapter of nonfiction information
in the back where I talk about things like the Bobblehead Hall
of Fame in Milwaukee or the Harley Davidson Museum.
So it gives kids real locations that they might know
or be able to learn about.
And that gets them excited about reading as well.
David, I'm sorry, guys.
I didn't mean to do that.
David, I'm curious, where are you from and how does maybe
the sports fan base or the fan base around sports
in your neck of the woods compared to ours?
and like why Milwaukee
of any place sure well i'm actually living outside of boston so there's
there are some sports teams out here
and people do get pretty rabid about their their teams
including the Boston Red Sox uh
but um you know it's it's great to go and visit all the different
major league stadiums that I have for my series
because all the fans in different areas they love
their teams they love their city but again
when i went to milwaukee um i wrote two books it's the
First time I've written two books about one stadium
because I just love the environment.
It was such a great stadium, such a great team,
such incredible history and again, wonderful fans.
So it was really fun to do it.
Yeah. So obviously we're looking at some of these pictures right here.
You visited some local attractions. You talked to folks at AmFam Field.
Book aside, we're going to the World Series.
How are you feeling about that?
I think it's thrilling. That's so exciting.
I'm so excited for Milwaukee Brewers fans in Milwaukee.
it's such a great team and i think this is going
to be the year for the Brewers um uh i would love
to see the Boston Red Sox in the World Series
but that's clearly not going to happen so i think i
think you guys are my team this year
and uh it's going to be so exciting to see a World Series uh
at at the Brewer's stadium or maybe
when we can get another book out of this
maybe yeah david uh first of all congratulations
but also thank you for writing books that kids
will want to read. That is a tough thing
as a parent of a 10-year-old to get your child to
want to read, and I believe that these will truly do that.
So thank you so much for joining us today.
Where can we find the books before you take off?
You're welcome. You can find the books at most
local bookstores. I know that many
of the Wisconsin bookstores stock these books and have them on
order. I'm also sending some signed book plates
to many of the bookstores, and of course you can get
them online at your favorite online bookstore.
And I'll put in one more plug. I've got a couple
of Green Bay Packers books coming out after the World Series is over.
So stay tuned for those
with my same characters. And I think some
of you people out there like the Packers.
A little bit. Yeah. Thank you so much. David Kelly.
Thank you. Thank you. All right. Still
ahead on Real Milwaukee.
This is the time of year where the party outside tends to move inside.
tip to make sure that your home is ready next
let's circle back okay sounds good all right
entertaining season is officially here
and apparently the stress of having your home
guest ready can actually prevent people
from hosting that's right Esteli art director
and diy expert Lindy Kataria is here
with some uh quick cleaning tricks right some easy fall
projects and ways to be a great host nothing says
get it together like someone saying i'm on my way
for sure and then we did a survey
and it actually said that the cleaning
is more stressful like double the time double
the stress of cooking believe it or not i could
see that sure baseboards yeah
because you don't you know you feel like you're judged by your whole
you know because you are at the first place
is the bathroom, that's exactly what we're talking
about, so like one of the most overlooked
entertaining spaces because you don't think
of a bathroom as entertaining but it's the place where people can go
and sit and judge your cleaning
skills, so you want to make sure you take care
of that, and like you said you're rushing around
you're doing a bunch of different things
so let's talk about like some multitasking, okay, um this is
our pink stuff, it's the power foaming toilet cleaner
so basically you just dump it in the
toilet let it sit for 10 minutes
and you can clean the other items while it's basically cleaning
itself, oh wow, and then you just brush it
and flush it, i'm looking at the video right there
so it foams up it gets all the sides
and look like underneath the rim which is perfect, yes, and
it smells amazing even though we're talking about
toilets, it smells really nice, your pink stuff
almost has like a um, how would you describe it? it seems like
a rhubarb, yep, and it's funny my son
said, oh i love cleaning with the pink stuff, i was like really
because your bathroom doesn't say that
you love cleaning, but it does otherwise, okay good to know
so this, and then this is the paste, this is
also easy run around your house, you can squeeze it directly onto
the surface, okay, and then you
wipe it down with a sponge and it's a mild abrasive
and also smells amazing, okay so you
could use that on this stuff, it wouldn't
scratch it, yeah, always read the back
just to make sure you're using
the right product you know for your cleaning okay
and for the surface
and then we have these two, these are wipes and I had the
man, you thought of everything here I can
get you have nice nails let me do them
there we got it oh they're pink they're pink
but they I mean they smell nice but
like you're running around at the last
minute yeah just easily go through and
wipe it well Derek I love a good wipe I sure
do and this was a good could oh
oh this is lovely and it has a good consistency too
of a cloth you know what i mean like you can
scrub a little something get up yeah it's oh
that's very nice fragrance oh i love that and
you're right it does have a good texture
to it would actually clean some of them i feel like
you pull them out and they don't even make it out of the thing
because they just rip right away yeah
you saw you saw how aggressively i pulled that out
and still it lived don't mind if i do yeah
thank you so much for tidying up for our guests
so the other thing i was thinking of with our
guests I have a cousin and every time she's
the host everything's seasonal in her bathroom and
I'm like all right Ashley you know overkill there
but anyways I was like you could I could do it too
and it was some simple things and one of the things our survey
also showed us is that Midwesterners
will judge clutter that's another thing
so you want to declutter your space but you don't want
to have people come into your restroom
and not have the supplies right so we need toilet paper
in there so what I did with this toilet paper holder I used just
a regular box you can get at
craft store, I painted it with our 2x espresso
and then I added a little bit of our Modern
Masters metallic gold, oh that gives it
that look, yes, I didn't even realize that, I thought it was
stained, me too, I didn't realize that that was wow
and it is super simple, there I am doing it on it
just literally just brushing it
and just in wiping it, it's super simple, and then I added these hinges
just because I thought it looked cool
and I like to be a little extra, so I gave it layers, it gave
a texture and it gave it, you know, that, yeah
but it feels like cabinets, yeah, yeah, it's very very
those are super easy, those uh little hinges, see
I just screwed them right now, is there anywhere
people can watch these videos, um, do you post them on your Instagram
or anything, I I can talk to us
about that, I feel like you should
do because I, yeah, I feel like this, I we need it, we need to
step by step because this is really good, oh well thank you
so much, so I did the same thing with
we had a little wooden frame in my bath
in my, not my bathroom, in the studio and I used this
less mess which I've brought on here before
because it literally just rubs on like shoe
polish and I put a little poem in here I told
my husband, it was inspired by us and he uh didn't
think that he looked like himself in it
but whatever, no, I like that also because I have a
couple of frames that I had wanted to redo
but I didn't want to mess up like the inside of it and
you wanted something that was just right for the width of oh yeah
and yeah and if you don't want
to yeah if you don't want to disassemble
your frame it's super easy like less mess it literally
is you can see me using it right there it didn't even get
on the paper i was staining it i don't
really question if you furniture that's like
a little banged up around the edges would that do
it or no um i don't you know what i mean just you
know what i mean you can like we have lots of
things for oh nick for uh her living room over here we have lots
of like little in my nesting
area sticks and things like
that but i can't imagine why you couldn't use that if you match
the stain right anyway um i want to talk about
these because this is a beautiful touch right
here that kind of just even elevates a frame.
Thank you so much for acknowledging that but again
like I said I love to find stuff that I can just reuse
and so this was a frame that we used on
another set and I thought you know what instead
of doing like a traditional wreath and some of
my co-workers are like Lindy we don't know how
to do the things you know how to do and making a
wreath is hard. I was like this is not hard.
I painted it with the low odor which we've talked
about before and I did the matte moss green
because I kind of want the green theme but I
wanted it to be a little different it's almost like
a cream it's very neutral and celery kind
of like the color of the year it is yeah
and using the low odor like talking about what we're
wanting everything to get ready quickly for our guests
this dries super fast and you don't have
to wait to recoat it
so it's a really fast project to do but all i did was just tie on
the leaves to this so who could not do that everybody can
do that and then i added a ribbon
that's the easiest wreath ever
and it was very popular in our studio lots of people called dibs
on it but oh this is absolutely beautiful too i almost forgot about
that so you're talking about
having guests over you want you wanted to have one of these yes
so having the disposable paper
towels versus a wet towel that you're having to go back
and like making sure it's okay for your
guests this is always a good tip
and same thing i painted it with the espresso but i did not use
the gold distressing on it but i did add a handle
that we had in the um in the studio it was probably
off of a cabinet or something
but i think adding those little touches just makes it feel
you know elevated and it's
also making you think of how you can reuse things around your house and
repurpose um because it's beautiful right there
well thank you yeah i thought it looked really
nice too and yeah and if your guest comes
in how could they judge this poorly right yeah the bathroom
smells amazing it's decorated for the season
and it should be a uh i was gonna say judgment free
zone but we want them to judge it give it
a high i'm obsessed with this before we go i want you to
get to the table yes oh yeah we're talking about hosting guests
and just a couple tips is you don't
want your guests to come in and feel like you're running around
so always try to be ready about 15
minutes before they come have a place for their coats
if you're a shoe free home have a place for
them to put their shoes and then have some nice
music playing always have your appetizers ready
and have like a drink to offer your guests
a signature cocktail yeah a nice little cocktail
but also it helps them because
when they're coming to your house they're standing around
some of them feeling awkward and so having
the snacks where they can access them and then giving them a
drink it makes them feel very welcome
and what we have learned from our survey too is that most
people don't want to come to your house
for perfection they want to come and feel welcome
they want to feel comfortable
and feel like they've had a nice experience yeah because you
don't want to go to a house and be like
this feels like a museum you can't sit down right
touch something you want it to feel lived in but then i
also feel like these touches make it feel
homey right you know there's a lot of care but nice
and you're so right Lindy the host sets the
tone oh yeah yeah for sure so yeah
so some nice music offer a drink and welcome your guest and
if anybody is inspired by any of these please share
your ideas um use the hashtag #myrestoleum
on any of our social media all right Lindy Godfrey thank you
so much thank you for your idea thank
you all right we'll go
milwaukee after the break
the New York Times article
is getting a lot of
parents talking so it asks should letting children play alone outside
be a crime uh the question
comes after parents have ended up in trouble after letting
their kids do things like walk to the store
by themselves. I mean, I think you know your children,
you know your area, you know, you know,
just, I say, do what makes you feel safe and your children safe.
You know, we grew up in like, well,
at this time of our lives, grew up in a cul-de-sac
and there were other kids, you know, to our left
and to our right and down the road.
So our parents together would let all of us kids play outside
without parental supervision
but we weren't like drifting far off into the middle of nowhere in the
neighborhood either but just close enough where our family would know
and their family would know
where we are yeah i think it's the walking
to the store thing it's not just kind of the question was
can they walk to the store by themselves for me it's
the cars on the road it's the people not
paying attention i feel like so many times they're looking
at a driver they're looking at their phone
i'm even scared for adult bikers on this side
of the road much less you know your kids so i just
kind of feel like it depends are there sidewalks
or just kind of what is the route that your kids
are taking walking to the store you know i've seen
this a couple times in our neighborhood i
love the fact that neighborhoods are so tight
but it just doesn't happen as much anymore that's
what i hear you know like playing flashlight
tag yeah like you just can't play flashlight
cops and robbers flashlight tag growing up
do you know what that like what that is no so i know
Once it hits, it's dark outside,
then the kids grab the flashlights, and it's like tag.
So you try to find them, and you're like, gotcha.
We just didn't have flashlights back then, but it was a manhunt.
Can't do that nowadays.
No, you are not hiding behind somebody's bushes
in the middle of the night.
Not with something that looks like an object in your hand.
Well, I think the times have changed.
People, I think, are just less comfortable
in general with having people even over,
having people knock on their door you know what i mean it's
a community isn't the same though i know
some people who live in neighborhoods
who don't know the neighborhood their neighbor to their left
or to the right and i'm like what happened right now
that's why i like living in an apartment is
because i feel like i know everybody you know we
all know each other yeah we grab each because you
see each other in the elevator it's social yeah you should know
who's on the wall next to you
i don't know i kind of like that aspect of it
because you're right i feel like even i
I go home a fair amount, and I notice in my own neighborhood,
I'm like, where is everybody?
I ran into a fellow Lions fan last week in my elevator.
I bet you did.
Yeah.
No, I'm with you.
I think it's just like assess where the store is.
We always walked or took our bikes to the store, but it
was in this little plaza where it was all back roads to get there.
You didn't have to go over any big, scary streets.
So I don't know.
I think it just depends on where you live.
Do you think that, when it comes to neighbors,
do you think that you have nosier neighbors in apartments or in houses?
Oh, houses.
Houses.
I agree fully because I lived in a condo for years
and I didn't feel like, again, didn't really know the ones to the left
or care to know the ones to the right.
Yeah, fair, fair.
And in the house, I need to know exactly what's going on.
I don't know why it's so different.
They were like on the wall aside from the kitchen.
Maybe it's different because people are kind of,
you know, sitting in their windowsills,
sitting on the driveway, sitting on the porch.
They're looking around, you know, in an apartment.
The last time I was home, the neighbors next to my parents,
they put up this, like, tent in their backyard
that looked like they were doing something in the tent,
like they were, like, some kind of a project.
And so we were all, like, standing at the window being like,
I wonder if they're, maybe they're spray
painting their cabinets out there.
We had, like, a whole narrative of what they were doing.
You know what I mean?
It's just, like, I think you just get nosy because it's, I don't know.
Apartments, I feel like there's a code in an apartment.
It's like, you don't...
I do agree.
Stay clear.
Don't knock on my door.
Yeah.
That's absolutely necessary.
Totally.
Yeah.
Do you give small talk in the elevator to get to know and be nosy?
I do small talk in the elevator.
I'm sure.
You don't even have to ask.
I do small talk in the elevator all the time.
But that is my way of meeting people.
That's how I ran into the Lions fan.
And yeah, I do small talk in the elevator.
You know what?
And it pays off.
So a couple months ago, there
was a carbon monoxide leak in my building.
And the fire department came.
It was this whole thing.
And people, it was like at 7 or 8 o'clock at night.
And so all of my neighbors know what I do for work.
They know that I go to bed early.
So I will say, now, I did sleep through it, which I know.
We have detectors now.
We fixed that.
But the number of texts I got from neighbors,
the number of people who were banging on my door,
the people who told the firemen, like, go get her.
She's sleeping.
Oh, that's scary.
I felt like the warmest hug.
You know what I mean?
like to know that you people who are looking out even
though they're separate you guys they're
even the world to me so i think that had i
not i don't know chatted them up they wouldn't have
known like she's sleeping go get her like bang
on her door make sure she you know they wouldn't
have known that so i'm for chatting everybody up
but then also as a building as a whole you want
that safety you want that security you know you want
to have eyes on the front door all together
totally yeah good stuff all right good talk here i
by the way i love my hood but i also love to
living as well guys uh gino's coming up next here we've got some stuff
from hollywood we need to
talk about it's coming up next later in real
life well selena gomez is opening up about her
struggle to quit vaping
and miley cyrus has her godmother dolly parton the late dolly parton
sent her a sign after her death
and gino we begin with that particular story what's this about this
is really special for miley i can't wait
to hear what you guys have to say about this so during a
performance at the hollywood bowl miley cyrus described
the events to fans now she explained
that dolly gifted her a mannequin of herself
of dolly one year for christmas now after her passing
cyrus said she turned on jolene lit a candle put
a flower on the floor and thought quote
dolly if you're here right now flicker the lights she told
the audience the entire hallway started
flickering wow the appearance marks cyrus's first
major concert engagement in nearly four years
Cyrus said that performing does not come as natural as it once did.
Have you ever gotten a sign from anyone?
Oh, for sure.
I mean, I think I get one every time I see a Cardinal.
Yeah.
For me, it's the butterfly from my gram.
Oh, nice.
When you see one?
The butterfly?
Yeah.
That's a good one.
Donovan, you got one?
A song.
A song.
I love that.
It's called I'll Be by Edwin McCain.
It was my granddad's favorite song.
And I will go years and not hear it,
and then hear it, and I'm like, oh, my God.
Then I freeze.
I get a little emotional when I hear it.
So for me, that's beautiful.
This is an interesting story here.
Selena Gomez opening up about vaping.
She's quit the habit, but it wasn't easy.
Yeah, so she shared a video on Instagram saying she believes
that heavy nicotine vaping changed her voice.
and warned friends, it's just not worth it.
Well, I'm not going to be able to change my voice.
I vaped nicotine a lot.
Nicotine is so hard to quit.
and I think I just wanted to say if you're going through it
or if you're even trying to vape it's
just not worth it yeah
so in recent years fans noticed that her voice sounds raspier and less
powerful than it used to some say that they've
been confused by her soft and monotone sound
well you know I really appreciate her coming forward
and saying like hey I think that this
is what this is because vaping is still
a new thing there's not a lot of research surrounding
it yet so and a lot of kids do it yeah she has a lot of folks
who look up to her i give her credit
yeah because there are some lasting effects
so the fact that she is coming on saying something
you know that's pretty good all right
so an Abbott Elementary star is making her way out of the
classroom and onto the stage yes actress Janelle James announced
her debut stand-up comedy special
with Netflix the one-hour special will cover
several topics from body counts and
bank accounts to why women should wrestle men i don't know
if i endorse that how romantic will
premiere globally on november 10th i think she's
hysterical like even outside of Abbott Elementary
i've seen a couple of her stand-up she
is so funny i'm looking forward to this you said november 10th
yes and i will tell you that i interviewed
her we had her on real milwaukee and i loved her so
much that she tweeted a picture of the two
of us being interviewed she said this man must be my
biggest fan i am i love you oh cool all right
so we know that nobody puts baby in a corner but now
we've got to focus on johnny i don't know how they're going
to do this so the dirty dancing
sequel will honor patrick swayze's character
but they're not going to bring him back with ai
thankfully now the producers say it's important
to let fans mourn him they're also chasing the
feeling and spirit of the original film they want
to find the thrill of young love again but so far
no word on a plot or a release date we do know
this jennifer gray will be back as francesca baby
houseman with a bunch of new co-stars no i just want
to kind of leave this one where it was
everything does not need a sequel
and it's beautiful the way it was with them as the
original actors the dancing it was lovely i agree you want
to honor patrick swayze don't make the
yeah agreed there it is all right you know thank
you see you tomorrow thank you see you all right
more real Milwaukee returns after the break.
All right, let's talk about this. Your pet might be
your best friend, but most Americans would prefer they stay at home.
According to a new survey by
Talker Research, nearly half of Americans say they'd
be irritated to see a dog while sitting
down to eat at restaurants.
You know, 45% of people say they do not want to see pets in grocery
stores either. Coffee shops, airplanes,
and workplaces also ranked high on the list of places
where people do not want to see a pet.
Now, there are some generational divides on this,
kind of creating some friction here.
Baby boomers are twice as likely as Gen Zers
to object to pets on planes.
Oh, yeah, that makes sense.
That does make sense.
I was just in Holy Hill over the weekend,
and there was a sign that said no dogs from this point on.
This woman brought her dog.
It wasn't a smaller dog.
It was a big dog.
And the dog started becoming rambunctious,
and she gave the dog too much room in the leash.
And it started jumping on myself,
my buddy's wife, and Karen, the little girl.
And they think it's funny.
So then I get ticked off
and say something that maybe is not the most polite thing.
But I'm like, number one, you shouldn't
have a dog over here in the first place.
Number two, you're allowing the dog.
She didn't even yank the dog back when it started going crazy.
And you allowed that.
And so then, yeah, you kind of get what you want.
People, it's okay you don't have a service animal.
But even if that was, it was not a service animal at all, you
need to keep it in your area because people could be allergic to it.
People could not want you to be licked or jumping on us.
It was that's not highly inappropriate. Yes.
And to laugh it off like it was a scratch to her could have hurt her.
There's a baby involved. She's pregnant. They have a two year old.
What are we doing? No, you're so right.
And the reaction, I think, is the most disappointing.
That's, I think that's what ticks me off and sent me over.
That never is.
Start laughing.
You'll be in an elevator and these dogs, like,
and again, like, I love dogs too, but like
not, it's just, they need to know how to behave
if you're going to bring them into these kind
of public places.
And not all dogs.
People have their own dogs.
It's exciting for them.
Like, there's all these new smells
and all these new people and like, they can't contain
it.
It's on the owner then to know their animal
and know that they can't handle this.
Like, it never ceases, like, drives me so nuts
when you're like in an elevator, you're
dressed nicely.
There's a dog that gets in the elevator.
They're all of a sudden, they're all over your nether regions.
They're ripping on your tights.
Like, you're just like, no.
And I just, and they don't do anything about it.
It's like, that's not other people's dog.
It's your dog.
You should control them.
And restaurants, grocery stores, no.
You're gone for half an hour.
Leave the dog at home.
I just, I'm sorry.
I think it's so inappropriate.
An animal that licks its own butt shouldn't be where there's food.
It's just, it's a health hazard.
I'm sorry.
And this is coming from somebody who had a dog growing up.
Yes, a dog.
We have a dog now in the family.
as well. Yeah. Scotch should not go to the
grocery store. Scotch should not
lick its butt. Our dog doesn't get on the furniture
or in bed with us. We don't play that.
No. I like that you guys are
passionate about this
too because... Wouldn't you be?
To be honest,
I have issues with larger
dogs that are getting
jumpy. So your situation speaks
volumes about kind of
taking care of your dog.
The little dogs are cute, but when it
said on the story about airplanes, I was like, wait a second here.
I can only imagine that
somebody that's bringing on the dog,
if that dog is not properly trained, there's going to be
probably an issue with at least one,
if not several people that are on that plane. I think
there needs to be some sort of warning that on this plane today,
there's going to be blah, blah,
blah. And then give an opportunity for people
to take the voucher or whatever it is.
Because even in carriers, that could be disruptive.
What you hear, what you smell, you know,
they need to let them out for a little walk.
All of the above.
Understandable.
Yeah.
I mean, love them, but just.
Yeah, I love dogs.
I really do.
But like us, our family dog,
we don't take him in public places because we know how he acts.
And I think what bothers me is that when you.
He acts like a dog.
He acts like a dog.
He gets a little bit beside himself.
And when you do have that reaction,
people are like, oh, you don't like dogs.
It's just like, no, I just don't like dogs in my crotch in an elevator.
Like, sorry.
There you go.
Sorry, that was rude.
I like goose.
I like scotch for a dog's name.
Yeah, she was sweet.
She was wonderful, and we never had any issues with her.
But we also didn't take her places that were not appropriate for her.
Exactly.
People know their dogs.
Yeah.
Scotch.
There we go.
Clearly, I feel like I had to wait.
There you go.
On that note, see you tomorrow.
See you later.
