Across France, shopkeepers, businesses and public institutions
are still reeling from widespread looting
and vandalism which occurred over the weekend.
There are still fragments of glass boarded up shop fronts
in the vicinity of this area
around the Place de la République,
with many business owners quite literally picking up the
pieces, wondering how they will pay for the damages caused,
when insurances will pay out
and whether the government will help them.
Hailing from Bangladesh, Hassan worked as a waiter for years in France
before he saved enough with his associate
to start a courier business and tech shop.
Now, smashed phones,
empty boxes from stolen packages and glass line his shop floor.
As Hassan awaits insurance assessments,
he is unable to clean up the mess.
He must also still pay rent, bills and his employees.
The shop was locked ahead
of the protests.
When Hassan checked his security cameras
on Saturday evening, he couldn't believe his
eyes.
Euronews obtained separate footage of teenagers
and young adults breaking into his shop for
the next-door building.
I was injured too.
They hit me several times in my knee.
And when I got home, they pushed me and I was on the ground.
Then I said, let it go, I let it go.
Locals have decided to help Hassan's business
by setting up a donation platform for him.
The French government, meanwhile, has launched emergency financial aid
and structural relief programmes to support impacted shops.
