By combining strategic thrifting, creative DIY projects like glass tinting and foliage flipping, and the repurposing of existing household items, the creator demonstrates how to create a rustic, seasonal atmosphere through intentionality and creativity rather than expensive purchases.
This fall, you do not need more decor to make a big impact,
and today, I'm going to prove it.
Well hello, and welcome to episode 2 of this year's fall series.
In my last video, we gave our bathroom a full fall refresh
and started creating little fall
moments throughout the main floor.
In today's episode, we're aiming to get more out of less
with staple thrift finds, simple DIYs, and items I already own.
Let's head to the thrift store.
Now, when it comes to fall,
I like to try to be as practical as possible,
and that means looking for things that are not only versatile
but can also stay out for more
than just a season. Okay so we're here at Valley Village
and one of the first things I noticed was
this super sweet basket for only $7.99.
Something like this would be great with pumpkins or dried
stems and I also love that it's big enough for things like hats
and scarves especially now that
it's starting to get cooler out.
And it turns out this is actually an authentic vintage picnic
basket from Vermont which explains why it felt
so substantial i'd say this is a great deal and
this is definitely coming home
with me now one thing i always
find myself drawn to especially
this time of year is wood it's such an easy way
to instantly cozy up a space without adding anything
that feels overly themed now i was so excited
when i found this very sweet vintage looking breadboard
if you saw my video back in the spring i actually made one
to try and get a similar look
this one already had that kind of old world rustic nature to it
and i love the dark wood
and aside from actually using them breadboards
also make great little anchors for things like
autumn arrangements and kitchen vignettes
or even just leaned up as a fall backdrop
i'm very excited to style
this and i think 5.50 is a really
good price now copper is of course
very fitting for fall and i've been using it everywhere
this season there's just something
about it that feels so nostalgic and homey to me
and i love how it can instantly warm up a space
i've actually been on the hunt for some new additions
to my stove area so as soon as i saw
these i grabbed them pretty quickly what i especially love
are these longer handles
i only have one other pot like this but i find
that the extra length really helps to fill out
the space and just adds a little more visual variety
and at seven dollars and fifty cents
each these were an easy yes for me
and my tried and true way
to shop for really any season is
just looking for items that fit within the color palette
and then mixing and matching for fall i
tend to gravitate towards those more muted tones
that are easy to work with throughout the year
neutral browns and beiges olive greens
and all of those muted rusty tones then i'll add a few pops
of the more obvious seasonal colors
for that festive touch now at first i couldn't really
make out what this was i just thought it was really unique
and loved that it was handmade
but when i looked closer i realized it's actually what appears
to be a fish which i just think is
so adorable something like this is perfect for serving
and entertaining and it's a great example
of an item that can be mixed and matched
and while eight dollars does feel a little high for the
thrift store handmade ceramics like this are harder
to come by so for something this unique
and versatile i was happy to spend a little more
and speaking of mixing and matching every season
i always switch up the colors of my books this is a very simple
and easy way to just kind of set
that seasonal tone while
also creating a base for layering in other objects you can find vintage
hardcovers for very affordable prices
at the thrift stores garage sales even marketplace
also make sure to look past any damage
or ripped covers nine times out of ten the actual book
underneath will still be in pretty good condition now
when i saw this cute little kitchen book i
just couldn't resist and i'm actually digging
the paper cover on this one also for any of you that
don't know me yet i'm originally from the maritimes
so this is a very welcome addition
especially for only 3.49 so we are all back from the thrift store
but i do want to show you what
i would consider to be my two luckiest finds recently
so the first one is this absolutely
gorgeous runner, okay wait till you see how big
this is, so I got this runner actually from
a consignment shop and it was actually sitting front
and center in the linen section, and when
I checked the price tag it was marked down from $14
which by the way is already an incredible
deal for this, but it was marked down
to $11.20, I'm like wait is this a pricing error because
no way did I find something this size
for under $15, even double checked for stains, rips, honestly
this thing is in such good condition it really
doesn't even look like it's been used, okay so
summer might be over but around here garage sales are still a thing
and at the last one I went to I
got all three of these sweet little glass pumpkins
and they even have little fairy lights, now this
place also had a ton of Christmas decor
so I may have made a few other purchases that I'm going to
be saving for closer to Christmas
but long story short I think the lady could really tell how
excited I was about everything
because she gave me all three of these pumpkins for only a dollar
and I would have been more than okay with paying
the original three, in fact I probably would have
paid 10. these pumpkins have been in trend since I
was a child, they're just so nostalgic I love them
and they're just perfect altogether, these new additions came
to a total of 52.18 and considering
most of them can be used throughout the year I'd say we did pretty well
so if you saw my last video
the only area in the kitchen I've done
so far is this little corner here. Everywhere else also
hasn't really been changed since the spring,
which I'm totally okay with. I think seasonal
decorating is so much more enjoyable
when we stop worrying about when we're supposed to change
things. If I'm still enjoying a space,
I'd much rather go at my own pace than constantly feel
pressure to move to the next thing.
Let me know if any of you can relate to this. Okay, so we're
gonna start with this.
We're gonna start with the stove area because I could not wait to hang
these copper pots and I really want copper
to be one of the main focal points this year so
I'm just going to go ahead with literally all the copper pieces I own
and try and just make this
area feel a little bit warmer.
And some of you have asked about these rods.
I actually got them
from Amazon over a year ago and they were super affordable.
They're basically just tension rods so
very easy to install with no drilling
and for the record I have not once had to adjust them
and i've put a lot of things on here so over here
on the right side of the stove we are going to
have a little fun and please ignore all
of the non-related kitchen titles normally i do like
to have the ones that match the room
but i saw this genius idea on pinterest and it was this
kitchen knife display but it was made out of vintage books
and i just thought it was the
best invention since sliced bread might not be for everyone
but you guys let me know what you think
actually loving this you guys what
do we think crazy or cute i
also stole my other breadboard
from the other corner since this area could use some texture
and to complete this grouping
of three i'm finishing it off with the first
official pumpkin in my home this season moving
back over to this other corner i just wanted
to add a cute little festive touch with some
decorative corn on the cob i actually got these near
the end of the season last year when everything
went on sale this is also why i like to circle back once
the seasons are over okay switching
over to the coffee nook now this setup already works really well
so i'm just going to be swapping
out some of those summery accents first i'm doing
a quick little picture swap with this sweet little
fruit painting i think the little pops of yellow
and orange against the black add the perfect fall
touch in here so these were actually a five dollar garage sale find
and i always like to kind of
shift these in between the kitchen and the dining room just
because i think they're so useful to
have and because i'm going to be putting coffee pods
in here not sugar i'm just going to turn it
around and voila and as some of you already know i like
to have all of my everyday essentials
accessible
so if it's going to be left out i'll always try
to put it in something pretty to finish
off the corner i couldn't wait to bring in the breadboard i'm
also adding this cute little amber
candle for some extra warmth i do also want
to mention that for us in Canada Thanksgiving is
actually this coming weekend
and last night we tried HelloFresh's creamy butternut squash penne
now this is actually just one
of their many Thanksgiving options they also have more
traditional meals salads even side dishes
and sauces and beyond Thanksgiving HelloFresh also
has over 100 new recipes each week inspired
by over 50 countries around the world and with fresh
ingredients delivered right to your door
that's one less shopping trip to fit in this would be
a great Thanksgiving meal if you're looking
for something a little less traditional or if you just
want to bring an extra dish to a large gathering
this meal only took 30 minutes from start to
finish it was very easy to follow
and sometimes there are some ingredients that you wouldn't
typically use so it's nice that they give just the exact portion
so that you don't have to go
to the store and buy like a larger container
of it especially if it's only for one meal

over on the left here i'm starting off with a fall vignette
and this vase was actually a
thrift flip from the very first video
on my channel i'll leave the link below if you want
to check it out now when it comes
to fall foliage brand new stems can cost anywhere between 15 to 40 dollars
each and when you need a few to fill a vase
that can add up pretty quickly okay so i decorate with
a lot of foliage and don't get me wrong i'm totally okay
with splurging on like one or two
but because i decorate with so many i just mostly thrift mine
and then what i'll do is i'll actually
just customize them to my preferred color
and this is super easy let me show you now there's
a couple different ways to do this today i'll be using spray paint
which is good for stems with
lots of smaller leaves a paint wash is another option
and it's great for toning down vibrant
colors i'll have that video linked for you as well
and i've had these stems for quite a while
i actually sprayed one of them with a softer green last year
this time i'm completely changing the
color and hoping to get more
of this deeper transitional burgundy look now you only need
one or two colors depending on your original stems
but i already had these on hand so i
experimented with all of them i'm just alternating between each color
in no particular order until i
get that multi-toned effect now
we officially have a new set
of fall stems added to the collection
and for a great deal
also for the record i'm definitely not against spending money on new
seasonal decor as you've seen some of my favorite pieces
are things i've knowingly splurged on
for me it's really just about being intentional
and knowing what my options are so i can decide
what's worth splurging on when to thrift
and whether i even need to go shopping in the first
place to finish off the island i'm just going
in and adding some of those more homey touches
the wild one i
decided
the picnic
basket
definitely
had to be in
this corner
the other
one is
actually
going to go in the living room
which we'll get to a little later this time i'm adding a second
garland which was an off-season find from Habitat for Humanity
and i'm really letting everything
just kind of spill out here
because i want to create that abundant fall harvest feeling
like i mentioned earlier decorating should never feel like you're
on some kind of timeline but i
also don't think we should feel stuck
with something either i'm constantly moving things
around and testing new ideas
and then changing my mind it's really just about letting that natural
process unfold speaking of testing new ideas i decided
to try glass tinting for the first time
i've been seeing this look everywhere
and it's definitely not just the glass pumpkins
i thrifted these candle holders back in the summer
and i wanted to see if i could make them look a
little more like the ones from Birch Lane only
this isn't going to cost us 62 dollars
all you're gonna need for this is an oven some gloss Mod Podge water
and food coloring now i had
also planned to make some amber bottles
but i accidentally used the matte version instead of
the gloss which didn't turn out so well
so always double check the labels so you don't make the same
mistake and in terms of volume i just kind
of eyeballed it i went with about an ounce and a
half of Mod Podge and then started with around five drops
of each color i'm just using a mix
of dark green and brown food coloring after mixing
that together i ended up adding a few more drops
of brown and then a very small amount of water
and surprisingly i only used about half the mixture so
you really don't need a lot now i let
these bake for an hour
at 175 degrees fahrenheit but this
will also vary depending on the products you're using once they
were done i turned the oven off
and then left them in there for another 45 minutes
so that they could gradually cool down i then went
in with a second coat using the rest of the mixture
and then repeated the process i have to
say for my first attempt at glass tinting i'm pretty proud
of how these turned out and considering
we now have two of these for a fraction
of the cost i definitely call this experiment a success
shifting over to the living room i'm just making
some very small changes starting with the gallery
wall and i'm only removing two pictures here just
the ones that feel a little more summer forward
these three feel much more like fall to me
and also have a lot of those warm neutrals
and something else i like to do is instead of going out
and spending money on seasonal prints
i'll just make my own usually it'll either be a leaf from my backyard
or just an extra one off
of a wreath and i'll just pop it into one
of my existing frames not only is this free but it also
means that i don't have
to store a bunch
of seasonal artwork i
also took the leaf from over
on the coffee table and i think it really completes
the wall now as you can probably tell i
use a lot of ribbon and love to style
with bows i think it's one of the easiest ways to decorate
because visually it goes a lot further than
the actual space it takes up and depending on the
fabric you choose bows can also work the other way
and actually help you to fill out a space as well
these wooden candlestick holders feel a little
on the small side for this area but since they're
such a perfect fit for fall i still wanted
to feature them i'm using thrifted mesh here this
will hold its shape and just give an overall fuller look
to the bow all i'm doing is folding
the ends over each other and then i'm using
this other ribbon to secure it in the middle
to secure everything i'm just sliding a short piece
of wire through the back of each bow and
twisting it around
the wood and these
little pumpkins
are one of my favorite
DIYs from last
year's fall flips i did about 10 of them in all different sizes
and i wanted them to look as
realistic as possible
so that i wouldn't have to buy as many
real ones each year now the rest of
the living room is staying pretty much
the same i'm just having fun with little color swaps and
layering
in more
of
those
smaller
seasonal
accents
and
that
completes
this
year's
living
room
i've
had so much fun decorating this year
and i hope this gives you a few ideas for getting more from
less this fall sometimes a little creativity being intentional
with color and shopping your own home
can completely change how a space feels
and i always love hearing your feedback so let me
know what you enjoyed from today's video
and what are some fun ways that you're decorating this year
