John Sr. came home from a bar drunk,
pulled a knife on her, and allegedly punched her in the
face. 16-year-old Griffin John II killed three school kids
and a teacher in Bend, Oregon last
Thursday, and the New York Post found some court documents about
his father. Here are some of the
most chilling details. The dad, Griffin John Sr.,
was a violent alcoholic who abused his mother
before Griffin was born.
The mother is Shantae Nickerson from a tiny paper mill town on the
west coast of Oregon. The dad, Griffin Sr.,
was from the next town over and a member of the Siletz
native tribe. Now, Shantae married this guy,
Griffin John Sr., when she already had another
kid with another man. She didn't have custody,
but this was apparently a problem because on
Halloween night 2009, John Sr. came home from a bar drunk,
accused Shantae of being still in love
with her ex, pulled a knife on her,
and allegedly punched her in the face. He also threatened to
kill himself. This was right around
the time she would have gotten pregnant with a young
Griffin John, either just before or just after.
John Sr. pleaded guilty to harassment. He got
four years probation. We found a handwritten note he wrote
to the judge swearing he wanted to get
clean, turn his life around, provide for his family.
And a few months later, Shantae actually
asked the court to lift a no contact order
and let the dad come back into her life so that he can,
quote, know his son. Apparently,
that didn't work out because documents show Griffin started
blowing off his rehab and was flagged for using marijuana
and boozing again. He was arrested in
a bar parking lot in 2012.
He allegedly punched an officer in the chest and headbutted another
police officer. There's also a medical report
that mentions a wound on his hand from punching
through a car window. Shantae told the court they
were not living together by this time, by 2012,
And I don't know when she moved to Bend,
but it seems to have been as early as 2014 because records show
a fishing license registered to an address in Bend.
Her son would have been about three
or four years old at that time when they were out there.
I tried to find John Griffin Sr.
I went to his previous listed addresses, but he wasn't there.
Nobody I spoke with around town knew him.
Our records have him as not deceased, but honestly,
I have no idea where he is or if he's even still alive.
