Saturday night in Limoges,
a bell tower that had stood for 143 years came crashing down
into a burning town hall.
Masked protesters set it on fire.
Two-thirds of the building's outside walls, gone.
A small store owner stares at the remains of her restaurant, in grief.
A couple sit sipping drinks at an outdoor café
as flames burn just steps away near
the Arc de Triomphe.
Destruction has become the norm in France.
Welcome to News Planet.
I'm your host, Kathleen Lee.
Limoges' 19th century town hall
was deliberately torched over the weekend.
About 550,000 people marched nationwide
on Saturday by the Interior Ministry's count
organizers claimed 800,000.
And by Monday, nearly 2,400 people had been arrested,
with almost 1,000 police officers
and gendarmes reported injured.
In Limoges, arsonists torched the 19th-century town hall.
Mayor Guillaume Guérin described
a clear premeditated intention to burn down the town
hall, with the people inside fearing for their lives.
Marseille's city hall was forced open,
Lyon's tourist office was burned and up to 100 stores
were looted in Bordeaux.
Sunday brought fresh clashes in Paris,
108 arrests around République, with tear gas
and stun grenades,
and the protests spread across the border to Brussels and Liège.
The movement began with concrete complaints.
Students described schools without enough teachers,
buildings needing repairs, and timetables
stretching from 8 in the morning until 6 in the evening.
Some complained of freezing classrooms in winter
and unbearable heat in summer.
Others challenged a university admission system they considered unfair.
They produced a common fear.
Young people were being asked to prepare for their future
in institutions that seemed increasingly
unable to support them.
A local protest became the initial spark.
As demonstrations expanded, some became violent.
Schools were set on fire.
Thousands of arrests and hundreds of injuries were reported.
Police conduct also became part of the dispute.
That created a dangerous cycle.
By October 17th, the movement had widened.
were getting out of control, even targeting small store owners.
They were beaten and their
stores were burned down from the riots.
A French woman joined the student protests but
was horrified when her store was looted.
She screamed, this isn't the cause, but they
pushed her aside, told her to shut up
and said they had urgent shopping to do. If students
wanted better environments for learning,
then why did they resort to such a violent and
inhumane method? Is there something the media is hiding?
On October 14th, the government said President
Macron recognized legitimate student concerns,
but believed political forces were exploiting them.
Prime Minister Sébastien Le Cornu accused figures
in the hard-left France Unbowed movement
of using the protests for electoral advantage.
What's been overlooked about that statement
is that the influence didn't come from inside
the country.
It came from a foreign state.
Many footage and records from riots show
that the majority of the protesters were not actually
French students, but of Muslim descent and other immigrants.
So it wasn't the citizens who started this revolution,
it was the evil ideologies that
snuck into the country from someplace else.
President Trump even states that Paris is going
to be a Muslim city very soon, and that
wasn't the deal.
He had warned France that the immigration
of people from an entirely different world,
with hatred in their hearts has shattered that once great country.
Close your borders and take control, before it is too late."
And now, his fears have become a reality.
People predict that France will turn into a Muslim country in 30 years.
If something isn't done immediately,
the fate of the French people will fall into dangerous
and evil hands.
The rest of the world will stand and fight for their justice.
That's all we have today for News Planet.
