#176 CAMERA Flip Through: Sefton Samuels - NORTHERNERS

Sefton Samuels' Northerners: Portrait of a No Nonsense People was published by Ebury Press in 2011 and brings together more than fifty years of documentary photography from across Northern England. Beginning in the late 1950s, Samuels photographed the changing social, industrial and cultural landscape of cities including Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle, creating an extensive archive of everyday life during a period of profound economic transformation. While the book includes portraits of figures such as L. S. Lowry, Alan Bennett, George Best, Arthur Scargill and Morrissey, its primary focus remains the lives of ordinary people and the communities that shaped the identity of the North.
Working as a photojournalist, Samuels documented factory workers, miners, football supporters, children, musicians, market traders and families with the same observational approach he brought to public figures. His photographs examine the relationship between people and place, recording industrial decline, social change and community life without relying on stereotypes or nostalgia. Northerners reflects a lifetime spent photographing the region from within, presenting a sustained visual record of Northern England that combines portraiture, street photography and social documentary into one of the most comprehensive studies of the region produced by a single photographer.
