A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Russian peninsula, an area characterized by high tectonic activity and eight active volcanoes. While the quake released energy equivalent to 21.1 atomic bombs, there were no tsunami warnings and minimal population impact. Additionally, the report debunks rumors regarding Mount St. Helens' activity, attributing observed smoke to small fires.
James Kaufman, World News Report today.
Ladies and gentlemen,
we've had a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on the Russian peninsula.
They have six active volcanoes on that peninsula.
This is also just offsetting a plate tectonic boundary here.
And so there's a lot going on in this area, as we will see.
Again, it came in as 6.9, 76 kilometers northeast of Ozernovsky,
Russia, a DYFI of 5, meaning there's not a big population in the area,
a shake map of 6, and there was no associated tsunami warning.
I think the depth's around 135 kilometers.
Now, it looks like Mount St. Helens is also trying to wake up,
and we'll take a look at that.
as well. All right, we're only looking at the 5.0
and larger earthquakes, and here's our 6.9. You
can see the 1, 2, and there might be more than I thought,
3, 4, 5, 6 for sure, and there could be
7 on this Russian peninsula just north of Japan here.
This is the Pacific North American Plate
boundary, believe it or not.
The Euro-Asia plate boundary is actually over here, and for some
reason, the plate boundary is not working on the map,
but I'll show them to you. I won't put
everything on, show you what's going on.
It's a very busy day around the globe, but let's get
some detailed information about this 6.9 magnitude earthquake,
which is a big one, and this is USGS
information of course they have it uh as a 6.9, 135 kilometers of depth we
also have Raspberry Shake
coming in at 6.9, 135 kilometers of depth
and well the russians coming in at 6.7 at 144 kilometers
of depth let's go get some detailed information about this quake
and see how large it is and then
we'll take a look at GOES satellite pointing at St. Helens
and some of the neighboring
volcanoes. Ladies and gentlemen,
it looks like they might be waking up. All right, we
have a very strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake right there
on the Russian Peninsula. There
are at least six active volcanoes.
We will zoom in and see if there's seven. And let's
get some actual information.
There are actually eight erupting right there on that peninsula.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Wow.
And that's right there where the magma movement's going on.
Incredible.
This is basically a subduction area.
And so is this.
Your Pacific plate is pushing under the European plate here
and under the North American plate here.
So you have two subduction zones right here coming together.
This actually goes all the way to Hawaii.
these uh sea mounds
which are underwater volcanoes all right this shake map says 6.7
usgs is calling out a 6.9 so we're going to see if there's a later
and greater version of this
let's take a look all right here we have a 6.9
again usgs 188 seismic stations caught this only
22 people reported it 21.1 atomic bombs worth
of energy wow folks wow
and we do have a later and
greater uh well shake map here here we have
the reports it looks like we have 35 reports
you can see that there's some people living on the coast down here
and then these cities up here
It reported it as kind of a middle-of-the-road earthquake,
although it was very strong, 21.1 atomic bombs worth of energy,
and eight active volcanoes right in the vicinity.
No place I want to live, but there you go.
This is an upgrade from a 6.7 to a 6.9.
All right, let's compare earthquake data
from different reporting agencies, starting with the USGS, a 6.9.
At 135 kilometers of depth, followed by the French at 6.51,
133 kilometers of depth, followed
by the Germans at 6.9 as well, 128 kilometers of depth.
Raspberry Shake is in there at 6.9 as well, 125 kilometers of depth.
Australia in at 6.8, 113 kilometers of depth.
The, well, Russian government in there at 6.7, 144 kilometers of depth.
The Italians in there at 6.8, 142 kilometers of depth.
Europeans in there at 6.9, 134 kilometers of depth.
All right, this is a very active area because of the subduction
and because of the plate tectonic boundary
and because of the eight volcanoes.
We've actually had one of the very strongest
earthquakes ever recorded in history,
not too far from the quake we had today.
It's a 9.0. A 9.0. 1952.
The top scales up there in the top five
for sure. So this is a very active
area. Now everyone's claiming that this is St. Helens perhaps.
One of these two here. And I am
not feeling it like everyone else is.
I saw several YouTube channels call out and we did
have the USGS fly over this area several times today,
which would lead you to believe that they
thought something was going on.
But when you take a look at this boundary here, St. Helens is going
to be more in this area over here,
the Rainier is going to be up here, and Adams is going to be over
the right. So these two just don't line up,
and of course I will show you what I mean. Remember
of this river here is the boundary between Washington
and Oregon and I don't want to call
anyone a liar I'm just telling you that they
were wrong that's it all right everything in green has
erupted the last 10,000 years everything in black within
the last 15,000 years and Mount St. Helens
is right here but West Crater Volcano is just south
of that but please notice that the river
goes down right here and that's the actual state boundary here
and i'm going to show you all again
the GOES map uh they're looking at this area
and there are no volcanoes in that area i'm thinking
they're looking at small fires that just started uh
although the planes did fly over uh mount st
helens and there was a very small quake there like there
is every day that's going to be mount
Rainier that's going to be Mount Adams I know
my geology real well that's Hood and I really didn't
know much about West Crater there's Glacier Peak
and Indian Heaven Volcano but again I want you to
see where the river dives here
and where Mount St. Helens is and where these West Crater and
Indian Heaven are going to be quite a distance away from the dive
and we're going to go back to
goes and take a look at the smoke,
I believe
what we're looking at are two small
fires. I hate to always make
everyone look dumb, but
that's what I'm here for. You can see
the two small fires that started
here. Mount St. Helens
would be right about here.
This is Gos geocolor
and this is the smoke that they're referring
to. If they would just
know the geology a little bit better,
you can see the dive here
and Mount
st helens would be in this area here
and the other active volcanoes would be here there are no
volcanoes that have even popped off
in 15 000 years over here again i'm believing those are
two small fires that started
although there were several usgs poseidon flyovers today i wanted to
show you all that they were wrong
so no one uh well no one believed them if you will you can
clearly see the location of what they say
are awakening Mount St Helens they've been other
YouTubers not me and the actual location based on the state border
and the river period now that
you know james is always right right uh please give us a thumbs up
and share god bless you all
and we'll be with you soon
