Qatar forges new defence alliances as Doha hosts Global Security Forum

The theme this year is alliances at the Global Security Forum here in Doha. It began with the Qatari defence minister and deputy prime minister announcing that Qatar itself is going to be going into new partnerships, new alliances, a new defence hub with countries of the region and beyond. As the threat of Iran looms large, there is still concern that there could be another round of hostilities. And I have been speaking to delegates coming not just from the region but from other parts of the world as well Talking about how the situation continues to remain tenuous New alliances are being formed as the ones that you've seen between the Saudis, the Turks and the Pakistanis As old ones are being tested almost on a daily basis The threat of the Ansar al-Houthi in Yemen And a new security architecture which looks into conventional modes of security including air, maritime, as well as cyber security are all being discussed here in Doha. The Americans, we've been speaking to them, are still hopeful that they have a say in what happens in terms of security in this region because of these new alliances do not necessarily mean that the region will stay committed to only one umbrella that was provided by the United States.
