Pregnant women in Yemen at growing risk as healthcare limited by fighting
Oct 19, 2026
Women in Yemen are facing growing risks
as conflict limits reproductive care,
the United Nations is warning.
Renewed fighting in the country has displaced tens of thousands
of people, including thousands of pregnant women.
Meanwhile, their access to health care is limited.
The situation is extremely alarming
and we have no data to size how alarming the situation is in
in the rest of Yemen in the areas where we have no access
because an element of concern for me
is that even if to a lesser extent to a certain extent
that is limited we have the opportunity
to tell the story of the people in Yemen
in the areas under the control of the government of Yemen
but we are not really able to give a sense
and an order of magnitude of any other person in Yemen
who's equally under a huge humanitarian need.
We estimate that the number of pregnant women
among the people in displacement
has reached a few thousand.
They're probably around 5,000 to this day.
It's 5,000 to 6,000.
And among those, 1,000 are going to give birth
within the next couple of weeks.
So this is the reality
that pregnant women and girls in displacement are facing.
Uncertainty of where they're going to deliver their baby,
who's going to be around them,
and whether or not they're going to be able
to reach out to a health professional particularly
if they face an obstetric emergency.
Two months ago the UN estimated that about three women a
day were dying due to pregnancy or childbirth related causes.
The numbers could now be much
worse.
