The Battle of Thermopylae: The Real Story of the 300 Spartans

The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC is one of the most famous battles of the ancient world. But the real story is more complicated than the legend of 300 Spartans standing alone against Persia.

In this documentary, we explore what really happened at Thermopylae during King Xerxes' invasion of Greece. Discover how King Leonidas, 300 Spartan warriors, 700 Thespian soldiers, and thousands of other Greek troops defended the narrow pass against the massive Persian army.

Learn why Thermopylae was chosen as a defensive position, how the Greek phalanx used the terrain to counter Persian numbers, and how Ephialtes revealed the mountain path that allowed Persian forces to surround the Greek defenders.

We also examine the final stand, the death of Leonidas, the role of the 700 Thespians, and what happened after the Persians broke through Thermopylae.

The Persian Empire won the battle, but the Greek resistance bought valuable time for the coalition to regroup. Soon afterward, the Greeks achieved a major naval victory at Salamis, followed by victory at Plataea, ultimately preventing the Persian conquest of Greece.

This is the real story behind the 300 Spartans, Thermopylae, Leonidas, Xerxes, and the Persian Wars — separating historical evidence from the legend that grew around the battle.
