Once again, French riot police
and young people face off in Paris on the Place de la République.
A day after a peaceful protest over the cost of living began here,
but degenerated into violence.
They're supposed to maintain order,
but now when I leave home in the morning, I'm scared I'll not return.
We've seen kids lose hands and eyes.
It's scary, but I think we must be ready
to fight for a better future in France.
A burnt-out car has become a makeshift monument.
for those who say that the French government isn't listening
to students or people struggling financially.
Well, I live in Brittany, so it's not as big as Paris,
but we blocked our high school
and we do what we can to show that we're taking part of it.
Moments later, more scuffles.
Over there we can see riot police who've arrested a person.
They just fired off a lot of tear gas.
Tensions are still clearly simmering in the centre of the city.
Not far away, the aftermath of Saturday's unrest.
Still visible in several neighbourhoods where scores of shops
and businesses were vandalised and looted.
Some say they've never seen anything like it.
Never before. Gas even got inside here.
We had to wear masks just to be able to breathe.
I came out to check and they've smashed
everything. It's like hell here.
There were similar scenes elsewhere in the country.
In Marseille, people did their best to pick up the pieces.
In Limoges, the city hall's 19th-century roof still smouldered.
The government must realize the reason the city hall burned down
is that we were unable to keep the rioters away,
simply because we lacked the means to do so.
This is unacceptable.
Calls for change are growing in France.
President Emmanuel Macron is under pressure.
Most people say violence is not the answer,
but few seem to know what is.
