Hey guys, Joe here. Thanks for clicking that button again.
I'm with the dog, and we're out in the middle of the woods,
just by my house.
It's 7 o'clock at night. I hiked around for maybe an hour,
got here at dark, set up, and got a fire going and stuff.
I'm at my shelter, my little lean-to. I haven't been here in some time,
probably since my last video here, to be honest with you.
I've been busy going up, doing bigger trips farther away and stuff.
Thought I'd give you guys a little update a little update video.
I haven't done a video in about three weeks
I'm getting ready to go out again soon
But I needed to put up a video
and I figured we're out here might as well bring the camera anyway
2017 I haven't camped yet this year is gonna be good
this year is gonna be probably my biggest camping year yet
2016 I ended up 57 nights out my goal was 50 so really happy about that
that. I got to do a couple of different things last year
that I hadn't done before. Last year
was the first time I really tried fishing for trout.
And by the end of my first real trip,
I caught a good one, but that was about it.
But by the end of the year, I've got the feel for
how to trout fish. And hopefully this spring,
2017, I'm going to put that into use and actually
catch more than one trout.
But one was better than my years previous. We're always moving
forward right always gaining I
also went to Temagami is the same trip to be
honest I had never been there before I met
a couple of new people last year
good some good friends
so that's good too I brought some scotch with me I
think it's about time to take a little swig
of some scotch I got I bought um
Lagavulin I think
that's how you pronounce it like a Lagavulin, Lag
avulin single malt scotch you can't have any I
was generously gifted a gift card
by one of the people that I met this year
who live around me Clint my buddy
Clint the dirty hippie
who lives in a canvas tent on his mommy and daddy's
property according to a lot of you
but we've become really good friends and he
gave me a gift card for the liquor store for 100 bucks
so I was there and I was
thinking, man, I can get a lot of really good craft,
a really good amount of good craft beer
for this hundred bucks. Go on, bud.
Or I can get some scotch because I'm never in a million years
going to buy myself a $120 bottle of scotch.
But with this hundred dollar gift card, I wanted to
pay 20 bucks and I'm like,
yep, I want to treat myself.
So Clint, this one's for you, bud. It is
so smoky from the moors
the peat bogs anyways back
to talking uh
this year coming up i have
opportunities to do things that i have not done
as well there's an opportunity to go to Norway
to do some filming and and adventuring i'm hoping
that pans out i'm hoping to find out soon if
that's going to work or not uh there's an opportunity
to collaborate with some big YouTubers
there is going to be a fly-in fishing trip i'm
not sure if it's solo or not myself and Mr. Sean
James from Myself Reliance have
been speaking together about possibly doing a trip in woodland
caribou that's uh far north
and then we we take both of our solo canoes strap them to a bush plane
and get dropped off on a lake far in and either do a route
and get picked up or do like a seven
day trip out we'll see we'll see how that goes i
do have access to some new land as well i've met
i've um i've used it once now
a generous subscriber offered me the use of his land
to film on and camp on so i have that uh
that's some new stuff that i can do some places that i
that i'm allowed to go that are really nice
that have good resources like a river with trout and
salmon running through it um so that'll
be really cool excited for that i always get a lot of
questions on my YouTube channel, on my videos and stuff like that.
And maybe I can address some of
the most common ones here in this video.
Do you carry a firearm? I do not. There's a few reasons
why. Let me first and foremost say I am not against it at all.
I would and I will. I live in Canada
and my part of Canada and the majority of Canada,
you're not allowed to just carry around a handgun.
I know you guys in the States may think that's dumb,
but it's just the reality here and it works
fine for us um i have i have my restricted
and my non-restricted your non-restricted is your long
gun and your shotgun and stuff like
that your restricted is going to be your handgun maybe
there's a couple other things that fall under restricted
as well maybe like uh i'm not sure
i'm not going to go into it i'm not sure um but i have
those i was never brought up hunting i was
never brought up with guns or anything like
that i did not have a male influence in my life i did
not have a dad growing up so all these all those things
that i i wish i would have learned i didn't
But now I do have people to show me these things, and I am learning.
But, yeah, no, I don't because I've never.
I don't because I have not been allowed to.
I don't because I don't feel like I need to.
The only thing that really scares me, not even scares me,
but gives me concern
when I'm in the woods is it would be a man, people.
This kind of ties in, really, to another very,
very, very popular question that I get,
which is what is the craziest experience I've had in the woods,
or what um what is the worst animal encounter
or anything like that and the reality the situation
is there there hasn't been any bad ones
at all i've come across bear black bear many times the
most uh serious time was on alone when i
when i was across just that short river from the black
bear and i spoke to him and i stood there for i don't know 15
or 20 minutes talking to the guy
and what they didn't show is i slept under
an a-frame tarp nylon with both open sides maybe
50 feet from that spot my camp was already set up it
was dark you know I was getting it was dusk
um yeah so I slept there maybe 50 feet away 12 hours
that night no concern I I really I was
finding it I did not feel any aggression
from that bear mind you this is black bear I'm not
speaking on grizzly at all I have zero zero experience
with brown bear grizzly bear I do not
never come across I've never camped in grizzly bear territory
when we were on Vancouver Island
for the show they told us that they know sometimes grizzlies swim
or swim over to the island but at
that time there had been not one scene swimming over there were cougar
but you don't see those
guys this stuff is so smooth it's
not even like like a whiskey
really where you feel like this
when you drink it it's really honestly like just
smoke phenomenal i love it so again on alone that
That was my closest, longest, most worrisome experience
with bears and it wasn't even worrisome.
We weren't allowed to have weapons on the show.
I had my axe in my hand at the time
and in my head if this bear charged me I was holding
my ground and swinging my axe at his face
and that is not what I wanted to do, but really
that was my only option.
Another question would be what about Sam Squanch,
you see Sasquatch ever, do you believe in
Bigfoot?
I do not.
say that i don't believe in him believe in it i it's
a far stretch for me a very far stretch
i've never felt seen heard experienced anything
that i felt needed to be described as bigfoot
mind you again i'm not camping in alberta i'm
not camping in the mountains in the rockies
montana wherever you know things like
that um vancouver island was the only place that i've been
that could have possibly housed bigfoot i i got
a little turned around one of the days i was there
and coming back to my camp man some
of the tree roots you know that had fallen over and trees
fall over and they they have that cavity
or the roots pop up like there could have a size of a
house in there like so very big i'm just walking
by thinking like oh my goodness you know something's
living in there but that's how big it
was out there i digress some of you may notice that i
grew pretty quickly lately.
I did a really big video where I went out and camped for the night
or the two nights and I built that lean to and stuff.
And I was at about 90,000 subs.
I put up that video and within a couple days,
I was at like 110,000 subs. That video now is at
400 and something thousand views.
For me, that's a personal best. My best video ever for view wise
this is like a 575,000 or something.
And I put that out two years ago.
And this other video is at 400 something thousand.
I put that out like a month ago.
So it was a really, really, really big milestone
for me to hit and I'm super happy about it.
Super thankful for it, for 100,000
and for these big numbers now on these videos, man.
So I put out that one video
and since then I put out two videos.
The one got like 70,000 views or whatever,
which is really good because it was just me
and a couple other guys goofing around in the woods.
And then the next one I put up was with me
and Scout camping out of the hot tent.
And that one's at like 370,000 or something like that.
Like super, super good numbers in three or four weeks.
Like, again, so that, again, was a personal best.
Again, I think that one even is beating the original,
the two-night lean-to one.
So thank you.
I don't know what I've done to deserve it lately,
but I'm very appreciative.
I really am.
100,000 was uh never even a goal
when I started nothing was a goal when I started when I started
this I was just making videos to put
in for competitions on a forum 100,000 seemed not even
feasible but now this is it this is what I do now
and it's all because of you guys I only have you
to thank, thank you sincerely, it's crazy, it's crazy
when you think about it I've met so many good
people through it too I've become friends with a lot
of the the good YouTubers on there, a lot of
the people who just commenting, I've camped
with people, people send me things
I see people repping my patches, I love
that when I see people, people like put a
post to Instagram with my patch
or on Facebook whatever, or my backpack that I
that we sold, really cool. I know Mike
from MCQ Bushcraft said he might be
coming to Ontario this summer
and he said he's going somewhere near where I
live, so I'm gonna try, try to make
that happen, try to get together with him for
day or something, uh see if he can, if not no big deal
but uh you know we've talked before and he
seems like, seems like
a nice guy, like he'd be up for it, I like
his videos a lot. Who do I watch? I
watch things other than bushcraft stuff a lot, um I do watch bushcraft
and outdoorsy channels, I like
TA Outdoors right now, I've been watching him
a lot, British guy Mike, I think he's British over
there, UK somewhere, Mike got a good sense of humor
and his dad's a trip too, um so check him out, TA
Outdoors, but the stuff I really watched, I really like
is like like first we
feet feast hot ones it's
a really cool show they they have like celebrities and
rappers and all sorts of people on there
and they eat hot wings and answer
questions it's really cool it's
a good format I'd like to do that with the
craft beer and interview people great
great show I think YouTube's the jam
nowadays man like some quality stuff being put out
on there got a couple cool
trips planned for the near future be doing two nights soon
and then two nights at the end of the
month with a group of people
and then in February probably uh middle late February I'm going to do
a solo five to seven day winter trip where I'll
be snowshoeing across a bunch of lakes setting up
camp getting uh until I get to my destination
so I'll probably set up camp once get to my
destination camp there for the duration
and then hike back out camp along the way and get to the
car again that should be fun after my last trip you guys
a lot of people um offered up some good
info about Scout for his hips
which i really appreciate i looked into a couple things so
we're we're trying some stuff
and uh he's out with me now he's doing really good so in all
honesty he is doing well for a nine-year-old dog i didn't want
to come across that that he's like
worse for wear or anything like
that for nine years old he's doing well i just don't want to
push it with his hips you know what i mean i don't want
to make him walk through all this heavy deep
snow where where it's struggling
and putting strain on his hips he's got these big cysts on
his on his joints and stuff too
but he's a trooper he will come regardless if it hurts him or not
he'll go i just want to put him through
that i'm sure you guys can understand that i have a phone
call with Malcolm from the Hidden Woodsman soon
to talk about 2017 plans working together so that
should be pretty cool i really like
the guy malcolm's a great dude makes quality quality
gear i got got his backpack out
with me today one
of my favorite backpacks it's the end of that
we're supposed to get 10 centimeters
of snow tonight we shall see how that goes i hope to
drive up north soon and build a quinzhee
and sleep in that it'll be fun hope you guys enjoy that
video quinzhees like um like
a quicker igloo almost you don't build the blocks you just
mound the snow and hollow it out dig down for a cold well and then
do a little um like a bed bench kind of thing
but yeah well folks i think i've rambled on long
enough i hope you enjoyed this video i wanted to get it out
because i haven't had anything up in a
long time and um yeah i wanted to talk
to you guys i wanted to to say words to you hopefully you
enjoyed it please please comment please reply
to what i asked you please comment on what i've
spoke about in this video let's use this video
as a dialogue i know uh there's a lot of times
i can't reply anymore because there's
so many comments now and uh it's a good thing but i try
to i try to read and comment and reply
so yeah thank you for watching
