We mark the anniversary of the death of Chopin on 17 October 1849, with this performance of Evgeny Kissin playing the full opening Allegro maestoso of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Zubin Mehta conducts the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
We also celebrate Evgeny Kissin's recent 55th birthday on 10 October as well as marking the premiere of this piece in Warsaw on 11 October 1830.

This performance is taken from a concert celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, held in Tel Aviv in December 1996.

In 1936, a group of musical migrants from Europe founded an ensemble in Tel Aviv that thrilled the classical music scene and in 1947 came to be known as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. In this performance, for their 75th anniversary, the world-renowned orchestra plays at the impressive Hangar 11 in the port of Tel Aviv, together with pianist Evgeny Kissin and violinists Julian Rachlin and Vadim Repin – musicians, whose interpretations are characterised by depth and virtuosity. At the helm is Zubin Mehta, who, as principal conductor from 1977 to 2019, shaped a particularly glorious era of the orchestra, striving for a new standard of energetic chamber music-making, as demonstrated at the end, with Beethoven's Eighth Symphony.
