We have a news alert here first at 6 of five year old boy
with autism was found dead this morning in Riverview.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says
the boy drowned in a retention pond near his home.
Fox 13's Jennifer Bayless joins us now live from the neighborhood there
in Riverview. So Jennifer, what more can you tell us?
Yeah, Brianna, tonight the family says they are still reeling
from this tragedy, so they did not want to speak on camera,
but they tell us it happened at this retention pond behind me where
the boy was found unresponsive in the water.
That retention pond is located
just across the street from their home.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office
says the boy's parents called 911,
noticing he was missing around 9 a.m. today.
Deputies arrived to the Grand Elm Drive 10 minutes later
with their K9 unit to begin the search, but it didn't last long.
Moments later, the boy was found in the neighborhood retention pond.
First responders attempted CPR
and rushed him to the hospital where he died.
Now this evening, Carrie Behor, founder and executive director
of the Water Smart Hearts Foundation calls
this a tragedy especially knowing this happened while
the non-profit was hosting its annual trick-or-treat
for water safety event today we had
the fire rescue here we had Card USF we had Children's Board
of Hillsborough County we had
so many local businesses
and community hundreds of people were here all in the support of the
mission to prevent childhood drowning
and raise awareness the support from the community was
overwhelming despite the rain today
and um we're doing good work but they're just
it's just never enough it seems before
also owns Watch Me Swim a swim school here in Riverview
through a grant from the Children's Board
of Hillsborough County the foundation offers up to
eight free swim lessons for children with autism
the classes focus on self-rescue teaching children
how to turn themselves over if they end up face down
in the water now before says water safety
is especially important for children with autism
who tend to elope or wander away from their
families. And on top of water safety,
it's important to have constant supervision and
water barriers. Brianna?
Gosh, your heart just breaks for families in situations like this,
certainly sad. Thank you, Jennifer, for your report.
