Mr. President, if you're going to sell
the Bible, you should know the Bible.
You know, in 2 Corinthians 4, 8, of course, the Apostle Paul writes,
We are troubled on every side, but not distressed,
perplexed, but never in despair.
And certainly it's the case with this extremism
that has been unleashed on the American people.
Failures on the economy, terror, out of control,
war of choice, skyrocketing gas prices.
Supreme Court assaulting the Voting Rights Act, Christina,
I'm so thankful for her, her public service spirit,
and for extending this invitation for me to join all
of you for this very important roundtable discussion.
It's always a blessing to be with the faith community,
faith community leaders.
Remain central to the communities that I represent, and certainly to
communities like Macomb County all across the United States of America.
Pastor Lancaster,
thank you for hosting us at this great house of worship.
And, you know, I'm sorry for the delay.
Someone asked me as I've been moving around the country,
wait, the Congress doesn't get anything
like Air Force One, unfortunately?
The answer is no, I fly commercial.
So we were a little bit delayed.
I was coming from South Florida, but delighted to be here.
These certainly are extraordinary and very challenging times
that we're navigating here in the United States of America,
certainly in the Midwest and here in Michigan.
We need a dramatic change in direction, that's clear to me,
but we want to make sure that it's
a people-centered change in direction,
which is why discussions like this are so very important.
I believe we're on the way to being able to be in a position
to govern in a more enlightened way after the November 3rd election.
And I stand strongly behind Christina.
This is one of the closest races in the country
and will help determine who is in charge in the Congress next year.
No pressure on y'all here.
But Christina, as I mentioned, is just a very talented public servant.
She cares about the community, cares about making a difference,
and I'm looking forward to partnering with you as we move forward.
As I've been traveling around the country over the last 20
or so months, you know, I've taken to often cite
a particular passage of Scripture, 2 Corinthians, the 4th chapter.
Now, that's 2 Corinthians, not 2 Corinthians.
The president, if you're going to sell the Bible,
you should know the Bible.
In 2 Corinthians, 4th chapter, 8th verse,
of course, the Apostle Paul writes,
We are troubled on every side, but not distressed,
perplexed, but never in despair.
And certainly it's the case with this extremism
that has been unleashed on the American people,
failures on the economy, terror, out of control,
war of choice, skyrocketing gas prices,
The Supreme Court assaulting the Voting Rights Act,
unleashing Jim Crow-like tactics
on African-American communities throughout the South, and hopefully
not beyond, but challenges all around us, but still not distressed.
Because fundamentally, not only do we serve a good God, but he gives us
the courage, the character, the conviction to make it through
a storm like this and come out stronger on the other side.
And that's been our experience, our journey, our history.
And, of course, that has always been anchored in the faith community.
But we know faith without work is dead.
And so we look forward to getting to work with all of you.
A significant difference running straight at the affordability crisis.
As you indicated, Pastor,
life is way too expensive here in the United States of America.
We believe we have to drive down the high price of everything.
high price of groceries, high price of gas,
certainly high price of housing, and also
fight for the principle in this country
that access to high quality affordable health care
can't simply be a privilege available only to the wealthy,
the well-off, and the well-connected.
We've got to come together to make sure it's
a right available to every single American.
And we're committed to working hard in that regard.
And the last thing I'd mention before yielding back to everyone is we
also know that democracy, our way of life, the rule of law,
the ability to participate in free and fair elections,
one of the reasons why I'm at the court serving with Christina,
I know she's strongly supportive of making sure
that in the next Congress, as Democrats, we move aggressively
to pass the John Robert Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
so we can end the era of voter suppression in the country once and for all
and put democracy in the hands of the American people.
So thank you for giving me an opportunity to stop by.
I look forward to our discussion.
And as we say in Washington, I yield back the balance of my time.
