Living in Oymyakon | How People Live at -50°C in One of the Coldest Villages on Earth | 4K

Welcome to Travel Terra — a journey into the world's most fascinating places, unseen destinations, hidden islands, mysterious landscapes, and forgotten corners of Earth.

Oymyakon, Siberia: a front door opens into -46°C, and the school stays open at -50°C. This documentary follows one house through winter in one of the coldest villages on Earth.

About 560 people live in Oymyakon, in the Indigirka valley of Yakutia, Russia. In 1933 the weather station near Tomtor recorded -67.7°C, and the valley still argues with Verkhoyansk over the title.

The first chapters ask about the house. How do the door, the walls and the boiler house keep the heat in? Why does drinking water arrive as ice cut from the river, and why does the toilet stand across the yard? What can a cellar dug into frozen ground keep cold?

Then we drive the Kolyma highway, more than 900 km of driveway for the coal, find the cold that closes the school, and stand in a July that once reached +34.6°C.

Between the last two censuses the village gained almost a hundred people. The final chapter asks why they stay.
