Michael Ormerod - Photographs.

Michael Ormerod (1947–1991) was a British photographer born in Manchester. He developed an early interest in visual culture and began making photographs in the 1970s. By the 1980s, he had turned his attention to America, travelling extensively across the country to produce a body of work that would define his career. His photographs concentrated on the everyday environment, often depicting small towns, roadside architecture, and traces of modern life in transition.
In 1987, Ormerod published Living in America, a photobook created in collaboration with the writer John Fowles. The book brought together photographs made during his travels through the American South and West, presenting a study of everyday spaces and landscapes. Working in both black and white and colour, he documented structures, signage, streets, and other details of the built environment. The publication remains his most widely recognised project and is regarded as a significant contribution to late twentieth-century British documentary photography.
Ormerod continued to photograph in America and the UK until his death in 1991. Although his career was brief, his work has been exhibited and published posthumously, preserving his place within British photographic history. His photographs are held in collections and continue to be studied as part of the wider engagement of British photographers with American culture during the period.
