Can You Really Turn a Simple Charcoal Sketch into a STUNNING Oil Portrait in Minutes?

Watch more:

Watch as we transform a charcoal sketch into a beautiful oil portrait using the alla prima technique.

Transitioning from charcoal drawing to oil painting can be an exciting journey for artists, as it involves embracing color and new techniques while building on foundational skills. Charcoal drawing is often used for its versatility and ease in creating dynamic, expressive lines and shading. It allows artists to focus on composition, form, and value without the distraction of color. As artists move to oil painting, they are introduced to a rich palette and the ability to create depth and texture through layers and blending. Oil paints offer a longer drying time, providing the flexibility to make adjustments and experiment with blending techniques. This transition requires learning new skills, such as understanding color theory, mastering brushwork, and managing the medium's unique properties, but it can ultimately lead to more vibrant and lifelike creations. Embracing this shift opens up a world of possibilities, allowing artists to express themselves in new and exciting ways.

In this short video, I start sketching with charcoal, focusing on getting the right composition and proportions. Then, I start the underpainting with Burnt Umber, concentrating on values and proportions. Finally, I add more colors. I aimed to keep it simple so that beginners can easily follow the steps.
