✦ Ständchen, D. 957, No. 4 (Serenade)
Schubert was so desperately poor all his life that even buying manuscript paper was a burden.
One day, talking with friends in a tavern, a heavenly melody suddenly came to him — but there was no paper at hand.
So he ruled staff lines on the back of the inn's worn-out menu and wrote this immortal melody down on the spot.
✦ Arpeggione Sonata in A minor, D. 821 (I. Allegro moderato)
The 'arpeggione' is an ill-fated instrument that has vanished completely and is no longer played.
From the despair of a sickroom Schubert wrote to a friend: 'Every night when I go to sleep, I pray that I may never wake again.'
Ironically, it was in this bleakest of dark periods that one of the most beautiful and moving melodies in the world was born.
That the instrument itself disappeared into history barely after being invented, leaving this 'sonata for a doomed, extinct instrument',
✦ Fantasie in F minor, D. 940
The work holds Schubert's tender, lifelong unrequited love for Countess Karoline Esterházy, of an aristocratic house.
Because of the gulf in rank he never dared confess his heart, and in the last year of his life he dedicated this great work to her.
The astonishing secret of the piece is that it is written so that, as the two players sit side by side at one piano, their hands cross and overlap without cease.
