Can the Democrats win back Latino voters at the midterms?
It's a question whose answer may determine the election's outcome.
2024, a 46% share of the Latino vote helped
propel Donald Trump to the White House.
But two years on, polls show that that support
has plummeted in spectacular fashion.
We're in Phoenix, Arizona, where Latinos make up more than 40%
of the population to find out why.
And we'll be asking, have the Democrats done enough
to win back what was once an essential part of their base?
For many, Latino backing
for Trump two years ago remains a divisive issue,
one that has even sparked family rifts.
I had an aunt that voted for Trump in 2024.
I mean, that even caused us to stop talking.
I just feel like I myself don't really
tolerate people that support Trump.
She believed that he would be, he would benefit the economy.
And I hear from my mom that she constantly regrets it.
That sense of regret is not unusual.
The president's approval rating has fallen to 27% among Latino voters.
Two-thirds say his immigration crackdown has gone too far,
while three-quarters disapprove of how he has handled
the economy and the cost of living.
So, how are Democrats working
to ensure they win back Latino voters at the midterms?
To find out, we've come to this canvassing event in a Phoenix suburb.
Let's take a look.
I can't tell you how many people I've talked
to that have told me that they voted for Trump two, three times,
and that they would never support him again.
They're unhappy. They've seen how he lied.
We're out there showing them that things can be better.
We could live in a better state and giving them that option.
And people are excited. We talk to them every single day.
The most important thing is really just getting back out there
and demonstrating to especially the Latino voters
that, you know, we have their priorities at heart.
It is a tactic that seems to have paid off with this voter,
even if he fears it will not be enough
to bring many Latino voters back to the Democrats.
It shows me that they care.
It shows me that they are out there doing the work,
but I'm still scared.
I don't think the Democrat Party understands
the psychology of Latino voters.
And I have a fear that there
are still messages being delivered by the Republican Party
I know are like very very manipulative
for for folks that are not super
informed I don't think that the Democrat Party
from my perspective isn't paying
as close attention to that as they should
