President Trump is reversing a decision
to live stream the execution of the Fort Hood
mass shooter. Reporter Jared Halpern takes
a closer look at the controversy
that involved both sides of the aisle.
Despite an earlier announcement by Pentagon leaders,
the firing squad execution
of former Army Major Nidal Hasan would be streamed publicly.
President Trump now says that is not the case.
Hasan was convicted of killing 13 service members
and wounding 32 others during a mass shooting at Fort Hood.
He's been sentenced to die by firing squad
and President Trump writes that while he thinks
streaming the execution might have been a strong deterrent,
quote, many very good and
well meaning people would rather not watch him
die through streaming or any other visual
device.
Some experts had urged the president to cancel
the live stream saying it poses a threat to
national security.
We know that there are a lot of sick people out there
who seek fame through violence.
And I'm afraid that it would encourage violence against Americans.
But others disagreed, saying it was a potent symbol
that could have made the world safer
for Americans.
The one thing Islamic jihadists
and others like that actually understand is power.
And that's a pure show of American power.
J.D. Vance was among those who said he would not watch the execution,
and lawmakers from
both parties also raised concerns.
The Fort Hood shooter should be put to death,
but there's a way to deal with this that's
proper.
That's how they do it in North Korea, not in the United States.
We're better than this.
We're a kind people, not a cruel people.
