The Truth About Doctor Who's Cancelled Christmas Special
Oct 15, 2026
Hello everybody, Ellie here for WhoCulture.
Welcome to my sauna. This is the hottest room
ever. It's getting a bit much now isn't it?
It's warm. The show must go on as it were and today I
want to basically look at the timeline
of the Christmas special from its announcement to the
announcement of its cancellation
and maybe just draw some conclusions about what happened along
the way for it to have been announced
and then to have been cancelled. So let's look at some
dates and some information shall we?
So all the way back in October 2025 which feels like an age
ago really wasn't actually that long ago they announced
that they were going to be releasing
a Christmas special in 2026.
They also announced that Disney were no longer partnered with the BBC
to make Doctor Who and that the Christmas special would
be a BBC only production. That really does
feel like such a long time ago doesn't it?
So much has happened and yet we've had very little
information at the same time in that small space of time.
So then in November 2025 we get our first
update from Russell T Davies
when he was asked about the Christmas special and whether he'd
started writing it yet and this is what he said quote not at the moment
because I'm busy on the
war between the land and the sea I'm
also shooting a show in Manchester so next year my plate clears
and we'll get to work on that but I know exactly what happens
in the special don't worry about that
this is the thing as well
because obviously the announcement came in October but then from
November through to December we had all the build-up
for the war between the land and the sea
so there was something occupying us
or only us in the UK I'm sorry guys there's still no update
honestly at this point I would just take it as the war between the land
and the sea is not going to
be released on Disney plus I just don't see it happening
in the UK at least there was a lot of
build-up and hype for the war between the land
and the sea so although there was this Christmas
special coming it wasn't necessarily the focus
of anyone at that point in time and even Russell T
Davis is saying it's not my primary focus
at the moment let's focus on the war between the land and
the sea obviously he was shooting other shows tiptoe at the time
so but even here he still
seems confident and um like he knows exactly what
his plan is going to be when he does eventually
write it then in December 2025 we get another tease
from Russell T Davis about the Christmas
special in Doctor Who magazine saying quote next December I'll
be here to trumpet and toot about
the 2026 Christmas special it contains
these three words bafflers winter knocks and village
this is where it gets a little bit confusing
and where I think very specific choices in wording
have been used in these recent announcements
because you can't have known three specific
words that were going to be in the episode
if you hadn't at least made some drafts made some notes
written some things down in some form of script
to know what three specific words are going to
be that I mean that feels like overwhelming evidence
that there were plans to make this
Christmas special that there
were written documents somewhere with ideas on them so yes
there may not have been a full final script written
and I think they're being very specific
in their wording but clearly there were plans being made
and words in his mind to be writing
for this special. Either
that or this was a big fat lie he just pulled three random words out
of thin air to continue teasing a special
that no one actually planned to make. Also in December 2025
Russell T Davies did hype up the plot
in an interview with BBC Newsbeat and he said this
quote. We haven't even started work on it yet says Davies.
I know what happens but I better
write it down soon in case I get run over by a bus.
Davis tells Newsbeat he shared his
plans with BBC bosses leaving them with jaws agape loving it.
So as we kind of knew at the time based
on these specific interviews as of December 2025
they hadn't started working on it yet
and we were all kind of under the impression based
on what Russell T Davis was saying here is that he's got plans,
he's pitched ideas, everyone's
on board, everyone's loving the ideas he's got,
but it won't be until after the press
and all of the things for the war between the land
and the sea that they'll actually
get started on it. And we were kind of all under
the impression at this point that come
March, they'd kind of at least be in pre-production
and they'd be in full swing getting this Christmas
special made. And everything they're saying here seems
to support that idea. So it is
very concerning or confusing when you get to this point
and they're saying, ah, there
was not really any plans there was no one to play
the doctor there was no scripts written and it's
like what were you doing in all this time it
also just makes me laugh so much because obviously
there's a little bit of uncertainty about whether
things ended amicably between Russell T Davis
and the powers that be and was he fired I don't think he was fired
but there is questions about
whether it was ended on necessarily the best of terms
but it always makes me laugh when Russell
T Davis is talking about anything he's ever written
because everything he's ever written
in his mind is the best thing ever
and he's like jaws were agape everyone was loving it and things
that have unfolded since rumours
that have floated around since maybe suggest that that wasn't the
case. So from that point in December Russell T Davies
then seemed to go quite quiet with regards
to the Christmas special. What we did hear
though in February 2026 was confirmation that the special
was still coming from the BBC Studios exec Zai Bennett.
Quote we're a big important part of Doctor
Who and are all motivated to make sure Doctor
Who has a long and flourishing life. We've got
the Christmas special coming after that it's time
for us all to work on it. These are things again
we were talking about there seemed to be a lot of confidence
and commitment from the BBC as well as
people like Russell T Davies for Doctor
Who as a whole for the Christmas special. This is February
2026 and the BBC are still under the impression
or still at least giving us the illusion or telling
us that there will be a Christmas special coming in 2026.
So that's February. Also in February 2026
we had the interview with Murray Gold where he revealed
that Russell T Davies had written
multiple versions of the special depending on different outcomes.
This is exactly what he said
quote, I know that Russell's written I think
multiple versions depending on certain outcomes
so that's all I really know
and I'm not sure I'm even supposed to know that. That to me says a lot.
First and foremost, that's two people in February alone
who aren't Russell T. Davis who are saying
that the Christmas special is coming and are publicly discussing it.
Either everyone seemed to be all in on a lie
or up until as recently as February, it was still going ahead.
Then April 2026, Russell T. Davis pops back up again, again in Doctor
Who magazine, talking about the Christmas special, saying, quote,
Wouldn't it be great if we got to this year's Doctor
Who Christmas special and nothing had
been spoiled and everything was new?
That's April. That's very, very close to when the
announcement came. I mean, the announcement came,
what, the second week, third week of June? That's
a very short period of time to have gone from,
let's hope we can get to the Christmas special
without any spoilers, suggesting the Christmas special
is still happening, to, nope, the Christmas
special isn't happening, I never even wrote it.
The thing is, it seems a very odd thing to say
if at that point he knew that it wasn't happening I mean
to me I feel like the best course of action
there would have been to just say nothing about it at all
so that leads me to believe that as of
recently as April there were still plans for it
to happen it was still going ahead as recently as
April because it just seems odd to me for Russell T Davies
to be talking about the Christmas special
in this positive way well kind
of positive way obviously negative in in the terms of spoilers
he's still talking about it as if it's very much happening
and let's hope that we can do this
amazing thing and not spoil it by the time it comes round why say
that if you know it's cancelled
just say nothing if it's cancelled teasing us
and stringing us along like that if you know it's not
happening just seems like a really nasty thing
to do were they just doing that and stringing us
along and giving us false hope
or was the plan for it to still be happening in April in which case
what the hell happened in the space of three months.
So then that of course does bring us to
June 2026 when they announce that the Christmas special is cancelled
and will not be happening
and obviously the show itself is going to be put out
to tender earlier. So then the question is
after looking at all of that what the hell happened?
There is no way they would have made
that announcement if they didn't initially plan to make it.
That just seems stupid to make an
announcement with absolutely no intention of following through.
So that suggests to me there
was initially a plan to make a Christmas special without a doubt
so it definitely makes sense that
they wanted the Christmas special to tie up loose ends
to make the transition into the new era much
smoother and obviously to keep the brand alive
and keep audiences interested in their show so I think
there definitely was a plan to do that but clearly something changed
and we have multiple possibilities
for what might have happened to cause those changes.
So the first one is the changes in
leadership at the BBC. So March 2026 Matt Pratten
who is a self-proclaimed Whovian, he's on record
saying that, he is named the new BBC Director General.
On the 18th of May 2026 he officially
started his new role at the BBC
and what's interesting about that is that March to May
period from when he was announced
and when he actually started the job that actually lines up
with when Russell T. Davies actually started to be quite quiet
and hush hush about the special.
So that could have been when things changed.
It does seem a little bit strange that he was very
vocal about the Christmas special
and then in that time where changes were happening at the BBC
Russell T. Davies seemed to say absolutely nothing about
the Christmas special. Maybe that's when
the uncertainty started to happen with changes in leadership,
changes in vision perhaps for the
future of the BBC as a whole and what that meant for Doctor
Who as a whole as well. Now this
leadership change possibility,
this idea is then backed up by Richard Osman on The Rest is
Entertainment podcast. He said, quote, Charlotte Moore,
who was the chief content officer of the
BBC, was leaving and Kate Phillips was coming in.
There was a lot of churn at this point.
As soon as Kate Phillips got her feet under the table,
she said, we're going to put it out to
tender now because the whole point of putting it out
to tender is this is a big deal for us.
it's the opposite of saying we're going to rest it,
it's the opposite of saying we're putting it
out to pasture. We want to give it multiple series.
We now need to find production companies
to pitch to us to say they want to make Doctor Who.
With the changes in leadership at the BBC
there was a change in focus on what they wanted to do with Doctor
Who and perhaps a desire to
move forward quicker with getting Doctor Who back on its feet.
So they wanted to focus more and press
onwards more with the show's future and multiple series
and the longevity of the show rather than
dwelling on one Christmas special that may
or may not perform well based on the previous two
series of the show. So that makes a lot of sense
from a business perspective, from a fan perspective,
from the perspective of the BBC looking
for the longevity of a franchise as opposed to just one
Christmas special to kind of save face.
The other possibility just in general for why the cancellation
happened is that the special itself was the issue.
It is possible I'm not sure but it is possible
that nobody was happy with the story that perhaps
the BBC weren't convinced by what Russell T. Davies
was pitching to them
and again you have to consider the response to what came before and
then they must consider that and then look
at the Christmas special and go is this going to
be worthwhile for us is this going to do good for us
or harm us as a company. The other thing to
consider if we take what Murray Gold said,
if there are multiple versions and lots of different
scripts going on and different pitches going on,
that does seem a bit haphazard. It seems a bit
rushed, a little bit messy.
It seems like nobody really has a clear idea of what it is they want
to do. So it's kind of maybe the idea that it's better
not to do something that could damage the
show further and cause irreparable damage.
You know, we were already on thin ice as it is in
terms of viewership, in terms of the response to current Doctor
Who. So if they're getting
pitches that have multiple versions they've got
no clear decisions made it all seems a bit rushed
and no one's really clear on what it
is they actually want to be making it's quite possible
that the BBC went this is a risk
and it's a risk we're not willing to take you haven't come to us
with a clear idea you've come to us with six different ideas
and we don't know which one of
those is the one you're going to be making
because you haven't got all of your ducks in
order that's definitely not the phrase but it is now
and again we can go to Richard Osman for
further commentary on this being
the situation he said quote as soon as you
say you're putting it out to tender you can't make
the Christmas special because
the canon of the show will be affected
so much by what they were about to do
with the regeneration of Hughie Gatward
to Billie Piper you can't lay that on
companies who are working on where they'll take
the Doctor Who universe if
you're about to drop an enormous Christmas shaped bomb in the middle of
that it makes that process impossible
for everyone basically what this is
suggesting is that if they want to focus
on the longevity of the show they can't
be bogged down with a Christmas special that's going
to interfere with that. No one's going to
want to pitch for a show where they don't know
where they can actually, how can they pitch for
something if they don't actually know where the show was last,
where it was left off? And without
the Christmas special details
and a clear vision of where that's going to go, they can't pitch the
future because they don't know what the present
is because it's not been written yet. If I'm being
honest with you, I think what happened is most likely
to do with the changes in leadership at
the BBC looking in at Doctor Who as a whole as an IP as a franchise
and going you know what I think
the best idea is to get this out to tender
so we can get fresh eyes on this and get cracking on
the future of the show and the Christmas special
is hindering that that's honestly what I think
happened I don't think it was a case
of Russell T Davies writing a poor script because I think
that's something that could be worked
on I don't think it would be as simple as him pitching an
idea them going no that's rubbish let's
not bother I think really what happened is they looked at it
from a business standpoint
and went realistically we could get this show on the road now let's get
this put out to tender the Christmas special will cause problems
for that, so you know what, let's
take the hit I think all of it plays
into it I think actor availability caused delays in getting
the show on the road for the Christmas special
in that time leadership's changed, leadership changed
at the BBC and they looked at it from their perspective
and re-evaluated what the best
move would be for the show and I
also want to just reiterate because again everyone's like
thinks that I'm just being naive
and just not accepting that the show's cancelled if the BBC had
no intention of continuing making Doctor
Who, if they wanted to cancel Doctor Who then they would
have just made the Christmas special
and left it at that. The fact that they pulled the Christmas
special, got egg on their face for that and put
the show out to tender shows their intentions to
continue making the show. If they wanted
to cancel it they wouldn't have done all that. If they wanted
to cancel it they either wouldn't have announced
the Christmas special in the first place and just
left it as the reality war is the end
and we're cancelling Doctor Who or at the very least they
would have gone right, well let's just make this Christmas special,
tie everything up and call it a
day, that's how I see it. If you see it differently, great, let me know
in the comments down below but
do it nicely, do it respectfully. I'm getting
a little bit frustrated with some of the not so
nice comments that are coming my way just
because I'm being a little bit positive about something
I don't appreciate it. Positivity
is great, being kind, being nice, looking at the bright side of
things is not a bad thing to do. Let me know
your thoughts on all of this in the comments down below
in the meantime I've been over to Who Culture
and in the words of River Song herself, goodbye sweeties
