If you follow business news in Columbus,
you've probably heard a lot of names being thrown
around, like Choose Columbus, the Chamber of Commerce,
Startup Columbus, Visit Columbus.
And if you've ever thought, wait,
don't these organizations do the same thing?
Not exactly.
Here's an overview of how
the economic development ecosystem in Columbus works.
Think of Columbus's economic development system
as less of one organization, but as
a large team where everyone has a different part to play.
For example, if a major company is
considering building a new facility
and bringing in hundreds of jobs to the Columbus area, that
mainly falls under the Development Authority and Choose Columbus.
They handle business recruitment,
expansion projects, and incentives.
Or if you already own a business in Columbus and you need
resources, connections, advocacy,
then that's more of the Chamber of Commerce's lane. Trying to build
the startup that can grow and attract investment?
Startup Columbus. Bringing visitors, conventions,
or other major events to the city? Visit Columbus.
And organizations like Uptown Columbus, Midtown
Inc., those really only focus on particular areas in Columbus
and supporting businesses,
public spaces, and investments in those areas.
And then there's Columbus Ahead, which is not
a formal organization.
It is a five-year strategic plan that was created to help bring these
organizations around goals to help grow the region.
And those goals are around the ideas of jobs,
talent, and place. And the organization behind Columbus Ahead
is the Regional Prosperity
Initiative. And they help bring all
of these organizations to the same table. And these
distinctions matter because economic development
is more than just about recruiting billion dollar
companies it's also about keeping small businesses open training
the next generation of workers and
making a neighborhood somewhere where people actually want to live
and spend money now there
is so much more to cover
so i put together a full roadmap of who does what who leads each
