Let's get right over to Gino now.
He has a special guest in studio for his segment today.
That's right, not just any guest.
An internationally touring comedian returning home.
Yes, home, right here in Milwaukee
for a set of shows Saturday at Shank Hall.
Edgar Sandoval is here with what audiences can look forward to.
You have the most interesting career path.
Tell everyone when you decided to start doing stand-up.
Yeah, it was about 10 years ago.
I'd always wanted to do it.
But, you know, you're younger and life gets in the way
and you have kids and family responsibilities and can never do it.
And then 10 years ago, I gave it a shot,
and it just kept going and going and going.
And now I'm all over the country doing this, and I love it.
I looked at your schedule.
It is just about you're constantly on the move.
Are you driving all over the country, or how does it work?
Some driving, some flying.
It'll be eight states this month.
I just looked at it.
Like, that's crazy, right?
Wow.
Wow.
When did you know you were funny?
Grade school.
I used to ask all the dumb questions that I knew the answer to,
but I knew would get a laugh.
That was kind of the M.O.
So then why not start right then?
You just thought, I need to do a normal career and then go into it?
How did that work?
Yeah, I just think it was one of those things,
you know, I think bucket list at first, right?
Right.
Let's give this a try.
And I was on the road traveling, actually, and I did an open mic.
It didn't go well, and I thought, okay, I scratched that itch.
And then six years later, I started up and just kept going from there.
So how does it work?
Are you constantly writing?
Are your ideas coming to you?
You have a notebook.
Where do all the ideas come from?
A notebook and then a note on my phone.
Okay.
So when funny things occur, I'll just kind of put it down there.
And then, yeah, we'll see where it goes.
And you're taping a special.
This is what's so interesting.
So people can go to Shank Hall, see you on Saturday.
Two shows.
This Saturday.
So we're doing two shows, recording two shows.
And we'll take the best of each one and put it together.
But, yeah, really looking forward to it.
I was born and raised in Milwaukee.
So I'm calling the special East Side Story.
I love it.
Yeah.
It'll be like West Side Story, except with no singing and dancing.
And knives.
And no knives.
No knives.
That's right.
So, yeah, it'll be a lot of fun.
Well, our director, Sarah,
did some research on you, and she came away a fan.
I think people are going to love to see you.
So what is, are the shows going to be different?
No, it'll be pretty much the same.
Okay.
We'll see after the first show if there
are any things we want to change or anything like that.
But most of it we'll fix in editing, so.
And what is your style?
Who would you compare yourself to in comedy?
I don't know.
Pretty straightforward.
Maybe like a less talented Nate Bargatze.
I don't know.
You want to sell the show.
You are more talented.
No, but it's a lot of stories about being married and kids
and all the weird things that happen as you kind of go through life.
Right.
And, yeah.
Do you do crowd work?
Do you work for the audience?
No, not a lot of crowd work.
And with this, we're just trying
to record the material and get out there.
So very little crowd work.
No heckling.
No heckling.
We want no heckling at this show.
We'll have to stop and start over.
But that morning or the night before,
will you be staying up nervous or happily excited?
I think excited.
You know, I mean, I've been doing this for 10 years now,
and I thought it's time to get it out there
and record it and really put it out there.
So I know the material.
It's really just about coming home.
You know, I grew up here, and I'm just so excited to be home.
The Brewers are doing great.
Everybody's excited.
So, yeah, just hopefully we can get some people out.
You know, we want them to sweep
so that the crowd is there in full force for you.
We don't want them caring about the Brewers at that point.
Hopefully they will have swept the Dodgers.
Hope so.
But if not, there's no game Saturday, so that's a good thing.
Right.
If they do keep going, it'll be on Sunday.
Okay.
So what makes Milwaukee unique?
You grew up here.
Did you find humor?
Are we a funny city?
I don't know if we're a funny city,
but I know just the people, I think, growing up here.
and just I just have so many fond memories
of I've grown up on the east side you know the
the fourth of July things in Lake Park and Little League
and soccer and uh and yeah just just so
many good memories my parents met
at St. Mary's Hospital oh you're kidding that's where I was born
and so to do this at Shank Hall
which is just just down the street just seemed seemed kind of
fitting you've opened for some big names talk about some
of the people you've opened for oh my
gosh uh Charlie Burns uh Liz Mealy April Macy uh
Kevin McCaffrey uh Adrienne Pulchier a lot of
these these folks have been nice enough to also have me
on the road with them so right it's been
a great learning experience especially starting later in life uh
so i've been very very fortunate
and very thankful that uh i'm getting
those opportunities are comedians supportive of other
comedians or is there a rivalry uh i think
for the most part very supportive and i felt especially
supported I think a lot of these comedians just recognizing
that I did start later in life
and and seeing me go through this versus doing it
in my 20s right I think they've they've they've
they've seen something where it's like yeah let's
maybe help help lift this guy up a little bit
which I which I appreciate you say that to your wife
and family and your marriage and things
like that in your act does that always go over well
do you need to seek permission from your
wife to include something you know I probably should I don't
my wife has gotten used to it
And I think the kids, when it's them, they do enjoy it.
I did a show in Las Vegas a few years back,
and my son was in the audience
because he was living out there at the time.
And he brought, like, all his co-workers,
and it was basically a roast of him.
So I think he enjoyed that.
Well, Edgar, so proud of you, so happy for you.
Now, where will this special, where can people see it once it's done?
We're still working on that.
At the very least, it'll go to YouTube,
but we'll see if we can get a streaming service to jump on with us.
And then we'll release it as an album as well.
We'll support this man.
He deserves it.
There it is, Edgar Sandoval, East Side Story.
Two shows at Shank Hall on Saturday.
Edgar, you deserve all the good things.
So people don't go after their dream.
You did, and I just admire that so much.
Thanks, Gino, and thanks for having me.
Of course, great to see you.
Go see him.
