▹Synopsis:At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the imperial family was weakened, and the eighth prince, Li Rubing, was forced to flee. Huihai, a lay disciple of Luohan Temple, saw this injustice and took him into the temple for refuge. The abbot of Luohan Temple recognized the uninvited guest as the prince and advised him to temporarily enter the monastery, shave his head, and become a monk, taking the Dharma name "Wuchen." That night, the eighteen Arhats of the Western Paradise descended to earth, manifesting their divine power and restoring the Luohan Temple to its former glory. The temple became famous overnight, attracting a surge of worshippers. Rumors circulated that the eighteen Arhats had left behind Buddhist treasures, and whoever possessed them would gain the world, making the regional governors of various states extremely covetous. To protect the temple, the abbot sacrificed himself, reducing Luohan Temple to ashes!
Enraged, Huihai descended the mountain alone to avenge his master, but was instead imprisoned by Li Jiuzhong, the regional governor of Beizhou. Wuchen, searching for Huihai, was also unfortunately conscripted and subjected to severe humiliation. The legendary figures Zui San Nian, Kuai Shou Wu, and Jiao Zi Xi Shi, led by the righteous thief Hong Xiao, rescued Hui Hai. Hong Xiao secretly loved Hui Hai, but he always treated her as a brother. He deeply loved Jin'er, a herb-gathering girl from the village, but Jin'er unconditionally loved his senior brother, Wu Chen. For Jin'er's sake, Hui Hai risked his life to rescue Wu Chen. Li Jiuzhong's daughter, Qing Qing, was unsure whether she loved Hui Hai or Wu Chen, her feelings wavering between the two. Li Jiuzhong, taking advantage of Qing Qing's naiveté and recklessness, once again won over Hui Hai.
Wu Chen, after much painful reflection, realized the truth: there is no paradise on earth, and without eliminating powerful warlords, there is no peace. He, along with Hong Xiao, Zui San Nian, and others, formed the "Arhat Team," using the name of the Eighteen Arhats to rescue Hui Hai. From then on, the "Eighteen Arhat Team" displayed their unique abilities, upholding justice and rescuing people from suffering; even Qing Qing joined them. The righteous deeds of the "Arhat Team" perfectly aligned with the Buddhist ideal of universal salvation, earning them the secret assistance of the Eighteen Arhats of the Western Paradise. The regional governors, unable to distinguish the genuine from the fake, became suspicious of each other, engaging in repeated infighting and ultimately bringing about their own demise. After being promoted to Crown Prince, Wuchen pleaded with the Emperor to extend favor to the "Arhat Team" and to marry Jin'er. The Emperor refused, sending troops to surround the "Arhat Team." Jin'er mistakenly drank poisoned wine, and Hongxiao died from an arrow wound during the breakout. Huihai and Wuchen, having seen through the illusions of the world and renounced worldly desires, sincerely converted to Buddhism. Deep in the mountains, the bells of Arhat Temple once again rang out.
