After he saves her and her baby from a pair of kidnappers, Gerry Peyton (Lynn Merrick) asks Boston Blackie (Chester Morris) for help in escaping from her ex-convict husband, John. But when John arrives and threatens Gerry, he's shot and killed by an unseen assailant. Discovering that the Peytons don't have a child, and that Gerry and an accomplice, Smiley Slade, are trying to frame him for the murder, posing as John's father, Blackie offers the larcenous couple $10,000 for the non-existent baby in an effort to expose their deadly scheme. And when Smiley falls for the bait, Inspector Farraday (Richard Lane) is there to arrest him, and not Blackie, for murder.
