Jacques Tati

Jacques Tati (born Jacques Tatischeff, 9 October 1907 — 5 November 1982) wrote, directed, and starred in six feature films and a number of shorts across a career spanning the 1930s–1970s. His credited feature-length works include Jour de fête (1949), Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (1953), Mon Oncle (1958), Playtime (1967) and Trafic (1971); he performed the central character Monsieur Hulot in four of those titles. Tati’s professional record also lists roles as producer and screenwriter on several projects and shows a background in mime and music-hall performance prior to his film work.
Tati’s filmmaking practice prioritized visually structured gags, layered background action, and precise sound design over conventional dialogue-driven comedy: he frequently reduced spoken lines to background noise and designed scenes that distributed comedic events across large framings. For Playtime he shot on high-resolution 70 mm and used a complex stereophonic soundtrack; the production involved the construction of an extensive life-size set (commonly referred to as “Tativille”) to control architectural and choreographic elements within the frame. These techniques informed shot composition, blocking, and post-synchronization choices throughout his features.
